After looking through the online catalog, this thing should have been released back during Halloween. Those MSRP's are scary!!
Going through and semi-conservitively making a list of items I liked, wanted and wish I could get the catalog price total came to $13,625. Even back in the day when I was spending money on trains like a drunken sailor I never had to spend anything near that for twice as many items. Yeah, I know, me and everyone else. But now with less competition, Lionel (and yes the others too), have turned into the model train version of Mr. Potter! And I do not buy locomotives that I already have just to upgrade the electronics. But this catalog contains some things I didn't know I wanted. I'm sorry to say I'm not seeing the value in these products anymore. I'm glad I bought when the pricing was competitive and during the famous 'blowouts'.
Here's my wish list:
2231490 Norfolk & Western Class A 2-6-6-4 #1210-WWII (Just because)
2226870 Santa Fe VISION LINE Stock Car 3 Pack (Haven't bought any of these before)
2231142 Santa Fe Texas 2-10-4 #5022 (5022 ran on PRR rails, and I'm getting to like big Santa Fe steam)
2231380 Southern Pacific A-1 Berkshire 2-8-4 (It looks beastly yet cool and operated not far away)
2231570 Strasburg 0-6-0 #31 (It's Strasburg. I miss going there) 2232080 PRR 0-4-0 #477 (These little guys are growing on me, plus it's PRR)
2233361 Penn Central RS-27 #2407 (I love everything Penn Central. And the RS-27 was only done in ProtoSounds 1.0. Cool it'll now be Legacy) 2233362 Penn Central RS-27 #2409
2233780 Amtrak Phase IV ‘Cabbage’ #90229 (I have a plethora of Amtrak equipment so I need these... I mean I'd like to have these on the roster) 2233800 Amtrak Veterans ‘Cabbage’ #90208
2233580 Aberdeen, Carolina & Western F9 AB (No other reason than it looks so darn pretty. Perfect for my made up excursion train power or just to haul freight)
2226430 Union Pacific Rocket Booster Flatcar 5 Pack w/Rocket (Just so cool looking. I have enough UP power that I only want the add on cars) 2243150 Union Pacific Rocket Idler Car 6 Pack
684028 BNSF Rotary Gondola 4 Pack (All these rotaries to add to the ones I have) 684005 CSX Rotary Gondola 4 Pack 684010 Union Pacific Rotary Gondola 4 Pack 684015 Norfolk Southern Rotary Gondola 4 Pack
2243260 Union Pacific Ore Car 6 Pack (Again, to add to ore cars I have to make the train longer) 2243270 Union Pacific Ore Car 6 Pack
Its doubtful much if any of this will appear on Penn American Railroad rails. Mr. Potter would bankrupt me!
The prices seemed to make my eyes water. I don't know if they were tears or from strain looking at them. After wiping my eyes and looking at my wish list I narrowed it down further.
2226870 Santa Fe VISION LINE Stock Car 3 Pack (Still on the fence for these)
2231570 Strasburg 0-6-0 #31 (It's Strasburg. I miss going there, but it still will be a stretch)
2232080 PRR 0-4-0 #477 (Could be next on the chopping block)
2233361 Penn Central RS-27 #2407 (I love everything Penn Central. But my eyes are watering again!)
2233580 Aberdeen, Carolina & Western F9 AB (This may be the gem of the lot for me. Love the wild colors for an excursion train. Now to pray Lionel gets the colors right)
There would be a lot more on my original wish list, and on the paired down list. It's a fabulous catalog but I haven't dodged all of the errors that comes out of Concord.... um, I mean China.

Berwyn toys just announced a Mth premiere Burlington F unit in the green scheme for $479 powered unit and $199 for a the B unit. …. There’s definitely room to move on street price here. MrMuffins Trains just announced an MTH special-run of Lehigh Valley F3’s at $459.95/ea for powered A’s and $179 for a dummy B. So this is the first direct MTH vs. Lionel head-to-head catalog offering in the same livery this year. Using Charles Ro Lionel “early buy” pricing, a pair of Lehigh Valley F7AA’s comes in at $1,000 vs MrMuffins MTH F3AA’s at $920. A more dramatic difference comes into play for the B-unit, where Lionel’s non-powered offering includes SuperBass sounds at $495 vs. the basic MTH dummy B-unit at $179. Nice to see the Lionel vs. MTH dynamic is still alive and well — albeit on a more limited basis in 2022. Too bad MTH isn’t still offering Bobber Caboose offerings. 😉

Honestly now that I think about it the bang for the buck is the Union Pacific Rocket booster set. If you total the cars up in cost you basically get the engine for free. I am going to order that set. Its simply iconic and probably will never be made again. The street price at my LHS is only 1,267.00. which is much cheaper than some of the steam locomotives.

2233580 Aberdeen, Carolina & Western F9 AB. I am getting this instead of the R&N F9s. Reason was I had forgot I pre ordered the RfN from PATRICKs Trains. Plus the colors of this unit is stunning. If the Big L gets it right? Seems like NASSAU Hobby has a very good price on their pre orders too.

The NS 40th Anniversary set seems to be very nice. $1200 MSRP does not make it that nice though! I think Lionel could have done some more development of Christmas items. The sets are being rehashed again. I miss MTH Christmas offerings each year. The only thing that might interest me is the Night Before Christmas Illuminated Boxcar. The trees are lighted on one side with LEDs. Not going to preorder, but something I might consider when delivered to dealers.
Totally agree, Christmas seems to be the biggest time of year for them, yet they offered nothing new in the Christmas line. I did get the lighted Christmas tree flat car last year
which was really nice. Just putting pictures on the side of a boxcar doesn't cut it for me...

The PRR 44 ton is a great price and i will order one. Hope it’s as nice or better than the Williams I just got from trainworld. I also try to only buy PRR but I may ignore that for the Flambeau Paper SW1. I really like that.

MTH's tooling for their 44-tonner went to Atlas, so it's likely miles out of scale.

Well, Brian, we all will have to Pray for Lionel on this one! The color Black seems the only color that Lionel has gotten right on in the past few years. As we know Lionel has produced colors that are not very prototypical even on engines they have done before. I would be afraid the colors might come out looking like a Circus Train....
I found this photo when ACW repainted the F9's to this paint scheme about a year ago! When you talked about Lionel getting the colors right, I immediately thought about this photo!

The handrails are a lot nicer than the postwar model and there might be other cosmetic improvements. If you specifically want a 44 Tonner this isn’t it, however, if you want a nice diesel and fidelity to the prototype isn’t important, this is a nice engine at a very nice price. If it were offered in a New York Central version I would buy one.

He only sells at full MSRP. So, $499 per powered A unit and $239 for dummy B unit. Being Southern Fan, anything new that comes out Southern captures my attention, but I will be passing on this custom run. I will probably wait until Lionel produces F3 units in the Southern Ivory! Then Pray they get the color Green correct which they botched on the past 2 Southern Steam Engines. However, good to see the price difference between Lionel and MTH with these units, David!

Here’s the real SW1. Looks good. It’s to bad it’s a Pre order. I’ll have to think about it. I’m still waiting on the PRR 4-4-0 that was pre ordered last year.
