I have just placed my order for the Lionel New Haven Minuteman Freight set.
I took the plunge because it is nice set and it will come in a nice set box as train set normally do.
But to be honest, all of the complaining about prices made me feel like this was a “hold my beer boys, let me show you how it’s done” moment.
So, go ahead and order that nice high end set that you have your eye on, you deserve it!!! You have earned it!!

I finally took some time to look at the money pit.... errr, I mean catalog. After reading the comments from all over the interweb and seeing the emails from a bunch of dealers, what I was reading and seeing wasn't stirring my chocolate. Even though I am thoroughly bats**t crazy for model trains my enthusiasm was tempered a bit so I waited to look at it. Mostly because there are a few items I still want to preorder from other importers.
Well, let me talk to ya! Rather than list the things I liked I'll share the cost estimated from possible lower street prices. $9,510. I may have to turn to a temporary life of crime to acquire all this stuff. It's amazing that with all the trains I have that I continue to find trains I didn't know I wanted. Truthfully, most of the items add to the volume of things I already have and I'd still wake up happy tomorrow if I don't buy any of them. But I am a sick, uncontrollable consumer of things that make me happy. I don't smoke, drink, take illegal drugs or chase women. I save a lot of money that way. Model trains are my vice. So what, don't judge me!
Chief on my list is a pair of GG1's. I am drawn to GG1 models like Sargent Schultz is to apple streusel! The PRR DLGE #4829 with it's funky striping is a version I do not have. I think it's unique and cool looking. The other is the Penn Central #4906 with the red "C" in the PC logo. It's my favorite PC logo but I wasn't sure it was ever used on A GG1. Imagine my joy when my research discovered several pictures of 4906 with the red "C" along with a couple others.
Next is the Norfolk & Western Y6b, not sure which cab number I'd want but I've wanted a Legacy version to go along with my #611 J and my TMCC Class "A". We shall see.
Other prizes are 10 different Milwaukee Road rib sided box cars to go along with the few I have from Weaver. And also single car and A & B sets of the B&O, CSX and Norfolk & Western 3 bay hoppers with the peaked ends.
Please visit my 'Go Fund Me' page for your generous contributions. A guy's gotta run some trains!

Yes I earned it all those years ago when people were shooting at me, but I'm smarter than Lionel thinks I am. No order for the 7th straight year from the Lionel catalog. I will no longer support the way they do business!!! What others do is none of my business but I strongly recommend others follow my lead. Btw, I'm still buying trains from many venues, I refuse to buy from a company that does not care for there customers!! Dave

Dave Of course, that is your choice to be “mad” at Lionel and it certainly takes dedication to be mad enough to walk away from 14 catalogs empty handed in the face of all those wonderful trains. However, given how well Lionel seems to be doing, you seem to be in small company on “I’m mad at Lionel” island. As for me, I will continue to buy great trains from Lionel, MTH and Atlas. I may even briefly shake my head in puzzlement at your “no Lionel” stance as I unbox the New Haven Minuteman Freight set as my new train set winds its way through my layout in a symphony of color, sound and smoke. I can’t wait!

One other item that has my interest is the American Railroads 21” Station Sounds Twin Unit Diner.
I have the MTH GG1 with the five car 18” passenger set from years ago. MTH offered an additional two car set that was cancelled and never made. Even though the Lionel cars are 21” if I put them in the middle of the consist they may blend in ok. But $900! Ouch!

I worked hard for my money and what I have invested in, has paid dividends. As one gets older, one learns how to manage and how to spend. Lionel has not been in my ballpark since their BTO program started. Not saying I wouldn't want some of their offerings, but pricing and waiting to be delivered. Let just say, I'm not a patient person when an item maybe delivered and I'm no longer on this earth.

I don't think I have ever bought something from any train catalog that had just come out. It has always been something I see at a store, show, flea market, available online, etc.
But keep in mind that I only got back into the hobby 5 years go. Prior to that I was in my early teens and had really no money to spend.

A take a chance and not order by BTO, although I don’t see why anyone would wait if there is something that you like. Is there anything to catch your eye in this catalog?

I have it, but I haven't looked through it yet. Have you had a chance to look at the catalog yet?

I have it, but I haven't looked through it yet. Have you had a chance to look at the catalog yet? Speaking of looking at the catalog, over the last few years I have begun to favor the online version over the print copy primarily for the zoom feature in order to see those more obscure details/color schemes. A case in point, I was so so on the Halloween Triplex based upon the print copy. However when I looked at the engine online I could see the really appealing graphics on the tender as well as other details that were barely discernible in print. If not for the online catalog I would not have preordered this engine.

Yes ditto on the nostalgia aspect since it is difficult to drag my I Mac I into the bath room. The laptop is a bit awkward as well!

The worse thing is, the more I look at it, the more train goodies I want!
