I am surprised that no one has mentioned it yet but in the catalog you can win a Legacy GG1. Just scan the bar code on the inside back cover of the catalog. A FREE Legacy GG1, who said that Lionel is too expensive! How many are they giving away? 1?, 2? I think the winner gets to go into the Lionel warehouse and has two minutes to carry out as many legacy GG1s as he can carry in 90 seconds.

I am continuing to review this catalog. I am really impressed that Lionel is releasing Postwar inspired, scale sized train sets like the 2124w Madison inspired GG1 passenger set with Lionel Lines Madison cars. That is so cool! The same with the legacy Postwar inspired GG1 Congressional Set. It is such a COOL concept! I hope that Lionel keeps it going with other scale sized legacy Postwar inspired sets. How about a Legacy Postwar inspired Thunderbird set with a Lackawanna FM Train Master. You can see the original Postwar set in the 1954 Lionel catalog.

That Legacy New Haven set I have my eye on, some early bird prices are below $1,700... hmm not bad That's music to Lionel's ears... and that's precisely WHY they publish catalogs. We've all been there. The first pass through, the really eye-catching items jump out at us. But the seeds are planted subliminally for all the "other" goodies in the catalog. Count on it. It's by design. Pretty soon you're pre-ordering stuff that never even caught your eye on the first pass through. Or worse yet... instead of one VisionLine GG-1 or one Y6b, you'll find yourself having thoughts of double-heading two of them. Let the catalog and the upcoming sea of custom-runs work their magic on you. After all, it's only money. And you said it yourself... it's not that bad at all.

We have all been there, the moment your try to figure out how you are going to pay for the stuff that catches your fancy in the latest catalog. BTO deposit versus BTO no deposit versus layaway, Pay Pal no interest for 6 months versus a credit card promotion with 6 months, 1 year, or hoochie momma 2 years no interest.
Back in the olden days you could sit back and wait since all the dealers bought plenty of inventory on any item so you could maybe catch a clearance.
But with BTO heaven forbid you should miss out on your object of desire.
With piranha and sharks they call this a feeding frenzy which is in a way rocky mountaineer IMO is referring to but in slow motion.
We get to simmer and stew as we calculate how we can skin this cat before the preorder pricing period expires.
It is kind of ironic that many dealers and perhaps hobbyists lament that what really is hurting the model train hobby is the lack of imagination of our younger folks.
Our problem may be that our imaginations are too well developed as we can envision these catalog temptations running on our layouts, or displayed on our walls. That is the gotcha moment.
As I have often remarked I have the greatest layout in my mind that could ever be imagined but will never be built.
And yes I am doing the economic check down right along with some of you.

No its not especially when I can put the New Haven Freight set on lay away. Heck, I don't even think the set will get here until summer 2025. Plenty of time!

By comparison Eric's trains took an hour and 52 minutes +/- on his review with special guests. How many minutes per page would that work out to be?

The add on tank car for the AEC set due out this fall was a bit timid IMO. I was hoping for something a little more adventurous such as the burro crane or anything other than a duplicate car. But something is better than nothing and would seem to indicate that the set sold in sufficient numbers to warrant another car.
Having missed the Old Rivets version last time around, that is the one big ticket item that has piqued my interest especially with the mechanical improvements noted with the gears. However as much as I like Old Rivets, the METCA GG-1 with the S-1 influenced paint scheme which was never used has a lot of eye appeal at least to me.

As some of us pore over the Lionel Vol 2 2024 catalog either literally or figuratively the YouTube Catalog Reviews have begun to pop up some much sooner than others. For those of you who watch these catalog review videos do you find them of value? If so which ones? I generally find these catalog reviews much ado about nothing of value; not even entertainment with the exception of the crazy fast review that rockymountaineer posted here a few days ago.
