Just saw a Henning’s Trains post in my Facebook Newsfeed that Lionel’s 2024 Vol 2 Catalog will go live on July 17 at 10am.
The only saving grace is these new offerings probably won’t see the light of day until mid-2025. I’m still waiting on a few jewels due out in a couple of months. And I passed on a number of great 4th of July sales, because of funds already allocated for later this year.
So yes… Lionel is definitely competing against itself once again. But it’s really the dealers that are carrying all of the risk these days.

Yeah, I passed on several juicy 4th of July sales, not because of the catalog though. I have my eye on a couple 3Rd Rail locomotive offerings and I want to build up my war chest before ordering them. But who knows? The Lionel catalog might cause me to build up the war chest even higher!! I like the new ET44 but April's York Meet put me over budget!

I'm curious to see what Lionel come up with but I very much doubt I'm in for anything that isn't truly exceptional.

An item in the Lionel catalog would have to be the greatest thing since Baseball and Apple Pie before I would pre-order. Just can't justify big buck purchases anymore.

Yeah, I passed on several juicy 4th of July sales, ....
One concern I have is Lionel's overseas factory for steam locomotives and their propensity to get the smokebox color WRONG. For that reason, I passed on some great 4th of July deals on the recently released 2-6-6-2 Mallets. The ones I've seen online are showing the primer grey smokebox -- something which turns me off immensely, because it looks so cheap... something you'd expect on an O-27 starter locomotive. In contrast, the darker graphite-color grey looks MUCH better on the high-end, scale steamers.
I thought Lionel finally got the message that the primer grey smokeboxes weren't gonna fly with modelers anymore. But as I've said before... they're obviously producing far too many SKU's... and it appears the factory went back to their old tricks on the Mallets. For D&RGW fans, Lionel DID get the smokebox color correct on the METCA D&RGW Mogul. And I'm really hoping they get the colors right on the upcoming D&RGW Triplex. Because if the Triplex color scheme is like the D&RGW Mallet scheme, then I'm refusing delivery of my pre-ordered D&RGW Triplex. Gotta be quick on this though, because dealers are literally shipping pre-orders out the door the same (or next) day they receive Lionel's shipment. I have a feeling Lionel Stateside doesn't even know what they're getting, until their shipment arrives in North Carolina. And that's sad.

David, I forget, did you ever get any Rocky Mountaineer bi-level cars custom painted to go with your set? I ask because the other day I came across the phone number of the guy I saw in the Silver / Blue Hall that was custom painting them a few years ago.

I’m so worried Lionel will get the Mr. Muffins special run berk wrong color wise. Some errors can be hidden with weathering like the smoke box color Lionel keeps getting wrong but not all.

I am always on the lookout for full scale diesel engines and freight cars in Canadian or New England themes.
I also would like to see more scale sized fantasy items like a Legacy Phantom engine!

I always enjoy the new catalogs but with kids in college I’m on a tight budget. My model train shopping is relegated to the bargain bin for now.

My first glance, there are a lot of nice scale sized legacy train sets that cost much less than the $4,800 that everyone is complaining about.

Talk about milking the GG1 . As I suspected, nothing for me.

Anyone catch the "C" Liner A unit minimum radius 031 and the "B" unit requires a 054 radius?
