Well not directly train related but it put a hurt on train money for quite a while
1972 with a 350 4v If that was your daily driver today, you would spend all of your train money on gas and then some. Beautiful car!

healey36, yes that's the Flyer crane car with the Arcade crane - it took me forever to find one...and here's the funny part - I have yet to find the much more common Flyer crane car with the sheet metal cab and crane in nice condition.

Well it was between that one or a 1970 which was metlic red with a 383 stroker engine in it with a five speed, that definitely would be eating all my train money in gas. I decided to go with the lessor of two evils, didn't want to get accused of racing the neighborhood kids.

Even more summer infrastructure purchases for the PENN AMERICAN RAILROAD.
Rail Car Department
(2) 100 Ton Hopper Car "Union Pacific" (Plated) (MTH 20-97996) I usually don't buy into the fantasy train items, but these fall into my category as "It looks real enough to have run on a railroad". And besides, the plated finish that MTH seems to have perfected looks stunning! Since it was offered in two car numbers I had to get both (21328 & 21381)!! These Premier hoppers have the usual 1:48 scale dimensions, die-cast metal wheels, axels and couplers, Kadee-Compatible Coupler Mounting Pads and separately applied details and operates on O31 curves. These will look great behind any road's locomotives.
Philadelphia And Reading Heavyweight #10 "Paradise" Observation Car (Lionel 2227020) A fixture around Strasburg depot since the beginning, the Philadelphia & Reading business class car known as "The Reading" in it's heyday were built for the railroad’s top brass / company presidents and other high-level officials. It transported railroad officials around the system to perform their railroad responsibilities. These cars were often the pride of the railroad fleet. Now known as “The President’s Car,” it came to the Strasburg Rail Road in 1964 after three Strasburg employees purchased the car from the Reading Railroad. It sat on static display until 2002 when it was restored to its original grandeur and put into operation. After viewing and riding on this beautiful vessel I had to add it to my Strasburg fleet!
It has die-cast trucks and couplers, flicker-free LED lighting, and a detailed interior. I believe the tooling was formally MTH.
Motive Department
2-6-0 Mogul Steam Locomotive "Strasburg" #89 (2000's) (Lionel 2331180) I was trolling around the internet looking at different hobby shop websites when I discovered this little gem. Waiting for the Strasburg #90 to be shipped I was surprised I missed this in the Lionel catalog. I was a bit hesitant at first with the problems Lionel previously had with the gear box with this wheel arrangement not too long ago. I waited for some reviews when they were delivered and after watching one (1) positive video I ordered one! My Strasburg roster is increasing nicely. Now 4-8-0 #475 needs to be made next!!
The Strasburg acquired #89 as Hurricane Agnes hit in 1972 and barely made it through flooding to the property. It's still in service pulling smaller passenger consists. I chose the '2000's' version as the tender logo was the one I was most familiar with on this engine.
It runs in LEGACY, in TMCC, or in Conventional mode, and with Bluetooth with the Universal Remote or LionChief App. The cool features are too numerous to list, so if you're interested click HERE! With it's just under 22" length it can run on O31 track.
A nice feature is the extra pick up roller which should help through long turnouts.
Bump-And-Go Trolley "Philadelphia Transportation Company"(PTC) (MTH RailKing 30-5204) I have always liked the bump-and-go trolleys. The Lionel #60 trolley to this day is still my favorite post war train. More than likely because my Grandfather once worked for the PTC and was a trolley instructor. It's one of the post war items I was born into that my Grandfather had acquired. There was not a question in my mind to get this MTH RailKing exclusive offering from Nicholas Smith Trains. The paint scheme and PTC logo are just as I remember growing up before the transit company was absorbed by the "Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority" (SEPTA) in 1968. I also like the movable power pole with the wheel that attaches to the trolley 'wire'. It's a conventional operator since it just bumps back and forth on any O gauge track system. This will operate through my layout city with my other trolley cars.
Railroad Novelty Department
Pennsylvania Railroad Tumbler - 30oz (Kalmbach Media #88148) This will be great for both hot and cold drinks when we head out for some railfanning up at Tehachapi Loop, Beaumont Hill or near the windmills at Cabezon. The cup is hand painted, decals are applied, and it is sealed with epoxy for extreme durability. Each cup comes with a clear slide lid and straw and in many different road names. It wasn't cheap at $45 but they are custom made in the USA by Bespoke Rail.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra Sphinx Train T-Shirt (Trans-Siberian Orchestra Website Shop) As a fan of TSO and attending many of their concerts on both coasts along with my hobby this shirt is perfect. The artwork is exquisite and the train flying through the night will be great to wear at their upcoming show in December.
And now I'll be heading to the York Meet next week to see what other trouble I can get into!!

Funny how it works sometimes; I have a Flyer 416 wrecker coming in from Virginia for a fellow OGF member. I've only ever seen one in photos. It's a bit of a roll of the dice as I haven't seen any pics of this one specifically, but I'm hopeful it's not too nicked up. I'll post a snap when it gets here. Crane cars likely had some of the most play-value for a kid back in the day. Clearing a derailment with one could take hours, lol.

I forgot that I bought this calf at the local train show a few weeks ago. It pairs well with my SW9 for long haul trips. The different color trucks are a little annoying, but I can live with it.

The calf is really cool looking with the silver trucks. I don’t know if it’s true to the prototype but I like it. For what it’s worth, while we model railroaders like engine sets and passenger car sets to match the real railroads weren’t so particular. They used whatever they had available that would get the job done.

My latest buy, besides boxcars to strip and paint, was a CNJ caboose to go with my recently purchased CNJ IR Boxcab… Tom

I picked up this 416 recently from a mate down in Virginia, destined for a fellow OGF member. If this is the one you're looking for, I'll agree that they are tough to find in decent condition (they're tough to find in ragged condition ). This may be the only one I've seen, but surely not as rare as the version featuring the Arcade derrick. I know, I know, don't call me Shirley...

Several years ago I purchased the New Marx prototype of an inexpensive version of their streamlined 20th Century Limited engine. As time went by I started thinking about putting together a NYC "set" using this engine and some of the 4 wheel New Marx passenger cars they sold at one time. I did a lot of searching and recently I was able to purchase a boxed set of these cars. So now I have an "inexpensive" New Marx 20th Century Limited with a prototype engine and production 4 wheel cars.
