Still buying some MTH 19th Century equipment. Been keeping busy with customizing cars too. My contributions have been sparse as of late. Nearing my retirement and taking care of the many loose ends involved with the twilight of my career… Tom

Got my new Lionel Pennsylvania L1 this morning. It is an awesome runner. The only issue I have is the whistle steam smoke effect. It's almost nonexistent. Smoke does come out, but it can barely be seen. I don't run with smoke on very often, so I'll let it slide. I wish Lionel would get the details straight. On their website it says the Min Curve: O42, on the end flap on the box it shows 054. Speaking of details:
(1) Obviously either the minimum curve on the website or the end flap is wrong and Lionel is not exactly careful about these specs being consistent. I think that there have been previous run(s) of this steamer and you might cross-check against the older specs to see which number they use.
(2) From the catalog illustration it looks like the whistle steam output is behind the bell so a little distance from the main smoke unit. There's no parts diagram on LionelSupport.com for this model but I'd bet that it uses a dual chamber smoke unit with one chamber connected to the whistle output by a tube and smoke fluid being added through the main stack above the other chamber. An issue with these units is that many rely on capillary action from the wadding in the main chamber to provide smoke fluid to the whistle smoke chamber and if per what Lionel's manuals state you are fairly conservative about the amount of fluid you put in it might be pretty scarce in the latter. A related issue that produces the same result is that depending on the configuration of the smoke fluid funnel under the main stack, fluid may not flow easily into the whistle steam chamber.
If like me you are not afraid to take the boiler shell off, both of these chambers can be fully charged with smoke fluid by taking off the smoke unit PCB or using a needle dropper to fill the whistle steam one. While in there you can check the connection to the whistle steam output, which is sometimes kinked or not properly connected. Some people have found that you need to tilt the engine downwards in the direction of the whistle steam chamber when putting in smoke fluid but that depends on knowing exactly how the funnel is configured. With a parts diagram you can tell but there isn't one, and I am not sure if any older version of this model had whistle steam in which case you might find the relevant diagram there.

VietnamVet1967, It's great to have a train-oriented hobby shop nearby. What is it like? Alfred It is called Great Lakes Hobby located in Utica, Michigan which is a a northern suburb of Detroit. An all around hobby shop that specializes in trains and plastic model kits and slot car racing stuff along with a little bit of everything else. He buys lots of collections from people getting out of the hobby so that is why I always check his used stuff first thing. He is about 5 miles from my house and the only other train store in my area is about 15 miles away. So he is my go to place.

Not new but found in my hobby shop's used train bargain area. Written in 1973. Trying to learn about all the different types of locomotives and drive systems etc. Tons of pictures....right up my alley

Heading to our favorite flea market today. Hoping to find something new, maybe a D56 building or two.

Picked up this set at an estate sale recently. My understanding is that it was a one-owner set from new, a couple of cars added, then repainted at some point many years later. There were a few modification made at some point, and there are a few parts missing. The colors aren't quite right, but they were right to him/her...far be it from me to change them. Virtually zero collector value in this condition, but epic provenance.
