First decal is on and setting. That wasn't so bad, but this is a small one. The stripes are larger decals so that might prove a bit trickier. I will get to those over the weekend. There are some excellent YouTube videos on how to apply the decals and they tell you what you need. On a side note, how do you pronounce decal? In the US I believe most of us pronounce it as (d-ee-c-a-l) I've heard Canadians say (d-eh-cl) (the "a" between c and l is almost silent) On one of the videos I watched the person sounds like they are from the UK and he said (d-ee-cl) - the first e is like in the US and again the "a" is almost nonexistent.

Well, one step backwards. I started the stripes on one side and it was a failure. Following the same steps and being as careful as possible, I applied the first of 4 pieces and as I was slowing trying to get it to settle into and around the non-flat areas the paint on the decal started to come off. I will need to order another decal set, luckily they aren't very expensive.
In the mean time I may practice with the remaining pieces from the decal set I have on something else to try to figure out the right approach for applying these. Getting them off the backing and onto the model is easy peasy, but getting them to settle into and around non-flat areas is mysterious to me.
One thing that I noticed after reviewing the prototype photo is that I shouldn't try to get the strips into the door/steps. The prototype doesn't have that either. I missed that when I previewed the prototype before I started. I was more focused on where the end of the stripe should stop at the nose end. Something else to pay closer attention to.
As always, any tips are very welcome.
At least I am learning!

Okay, you need some Walthers Solvaset.
You apply the decals, lightly blot them with a damp napkin. Work them into the desired spot. You aren’t worried about getting them to settle in just yet.
Let the decals dry a bit, but not totally. When they are in the place you need them, take the Solvaset and apply with with a soft paint brush. Just do a little along one side of each decal, so they don’t come loose.
Let the Solvaset set the decal a bit. After they dry a bit more, take the brush and coat the whole decal. Make sure they are in place where you want them and let the Solvaset work. After a few hours, you can take a damp napkins and press the decal around the surface details. Give it another shot of Solvaset and let it set over night.
Next you will find the decals dried. There may be air pockets, but you can gently poke them with a needle, and reapply Solvaset. It takes a few times to get rid of any bubble and get the decal to settle in.
This part takes time. I often go through a couple decal sets doing one subject, depending on the decal and the model.

Tom Good advise on the Solvaset and how to use it. Never lost a Decal or a redo with this approach. On long line Decals, don't remove the whole Decal at once, rather slide a portion off and with fingertip hold down while sliding backing off. Gentle taking the edge of a paper towel, catch the edge of the water and draw some off. Gentle slide Decal into place and if needed add a drop of water to ease getting into position. I use a plastic straight edge to align striping, letters, etc. Once in place, again gentle draw water off with edge of paper towel. Wait about 5 minutes the put a drop of Solvaset over the Decal, checking alignment. Once dry, check as mentioned for any bubbles and follow advise. If all okay, I take a soft brush and add one final brushstroke of Solvaset and the let dry. I let dry at least 48 hours and depending on look I want and if I added any weathering use either a Clear Flat spray or Semi Gloss clear, (I never cared for the look of Glossy). 4Dogs gave some excellent advise.

Thanks guys. I had the process down for the most part but certainly learned a bit more about the finer points of process from your tips.

Adam, Let us know about the color match. Alfred I did get the color match down to a very near exact match to the MTH SW9 maroon. Very happy with it. Decals will happen this weekend.

One side done. This is really delicate work that requires patience and practice. I’m considering this practice. If the pieces are too long, they tend to break. If you look closely you will see that some pieces did break and I had to carefully put them back together on the model. Also the model, since it is not to scale, doesn't lend itself perfectly to these decals. So I had to get a bit creative and of course it wont be exactly like the prototype, which is just fine with me. I think it looks good! Now to let it set then to do the microsol step which helps the decals really melt into the model.
