The shell looks much better now. Not bad considering all the problems you had earlier. The art of painting is talent, Preparations and Patience. You have come a long way Adam.

You sure have more patience and talent in this regard than I do, Adam. Look forward to the new color of the B&M.

I knew you would get this project to a point where you are happy with it, looking great so far.

With one more light sanding and primer coat, I declare this phase of the project complete.  Still not perfect but I’m happy with it and I think the end result will be more than acceptable. Next we are on to finalizing the selection of the paint color.  B&M fans know that the base color of the old scheme is maroon.  I guess Lionel isn’t a B&M fan. Here is my Lionel RS3 LionChief.  I love the engine but the color is clearly red, closer to the color in the middle can called Mica Red. And here is the SW9 from MTH in the proper maroon color.  I am going to pair my project engine up with this on so I will use the paint color on the far right, maroon.

The center can is fairly close.

The middle can, not an exact match but close.

I did a test spray of all colors on a piece of cardboard and will take another look. The photo probably doesn’t convey the colors well but to my eye the can on the right is closer to the B&M maroon.
I will take the engine outside where the lighting is better before making final selection.

The middle can looks like a good match to the Lionel engine but the can on the right matches the MTH engine and looks like it’s the correct color for the B&M.

If you give the shell a coat of the lighter maroon first, then after it is dry, paint it with a coat of the dark can of maroon. It will give you a different tone that may be closer to the color of the MTH engine…or somewhere in between…

I would talk to Ed, out new painter. I bet he can get the B&M color correct. Looks like an easy project for him.

Thanks Brian, I think I am close enough where I wont need Ed's help.
I did a test paint today on some scrap plastic I had from something I printed in the past today of the middle red color, the darker maroon and a combination of both. After it dries well i will be able to see which color most closely matches the SW9.
