RJ, I agree the Milwaukee Road Acela is a winner even if it is fantasy. Cool paint but with Lionel’s QC, I wouldn’t hold my breath on them getting it right. Even the first Acela had loads of problems, I can’t see this one getting better anytime soon.

The passenger set is nice, and will be still running after 71 years.

Well, they have dumbed down the feature set considerably, as in cars don’t have automatic doors and the train’s tilt function is “passive” - whatever exactly that means. Also no more IR connection between engines and cars but there’s nothing to control in the cars it would seem. Pluses are motors in both engines and StationSounds in the Bistro car, and the passenger car details are probably the best ever made in 3rail O scale.
But I can’t get enthusiastic at all at the price point, which seems to me to be way over the top.

You can watch it live on Youtube the Ryan and Dave show talking about the catalog. Funny how comments are shut off

There was absolutely nothing that interested me. It is probably just as well, I have plenty of trains. If we had grandchildren, then I probably would be picking a LionChief set.

At that price point of the Acela trains, I would've expected opening doors like they had in some of the older subway sets like the R30.
The Polar Express stuff always draws me in, but I have to put my foot down and can't get everything.
Overall, I thought this catalog had less eye-catching stuff than last years. I want to like so many of their RTR fantasy sets like the Area 51 and NASA, but there is just something missing design wise to them that doesn't make me say gotta have it.
Like always, I'll be going back for another look.
I think the saddest part of seeing this catalog for me is the reminder that we won't see another MTH one.

I'm not being negative but here are a few things that could cause it:
The absurd prices Lack of quality control Keep adding new control options without fixing the problems they have! BTO packaging Customer service Parts to fix these electronic wonders How many years can you go without offering something new It seems nobody is listening at Lionel!
Well that's My short list!

They’ve explained that it means that the feature is mechanical, not motorized. It appears to be a modification to the trucks so that the car body tilts when the trucks turn.
More generally, this version is by no means a repeat of the original, which Lionel said they would only make once. For one thing, whereas the original Acela cars had as many as five motors each for the doors and tilt, they have eliminated all of those motors, PCBs and control wiring. So it is a lot simpler and with less to go wrong.
I really did not look at the fantasy versions apart from the Milwaukee Road. I imagine that they might sell a few of the SF Warbonnets - a very few at the price, which still comes in at a pretty shocking level for the basic engine and 3 car set even with the pre-order prices I have seen so far.
P.S. There’s been no more of the obnoxious Ryan/Dave horsing around on this broadcast than you find with people on the Forum praising the Y6B as a deserving champion . . .

This catalog is a dud for me. Maybe a track tamper . Will have to wait for volume 2.

I looked at catalog several times to see if there was anything that would stir an extra pulse in me, but naww. Nothing of interest.

Maybe I should switch to S-Gauge. In that catalog, they have some neat EP-5s at prices I can handle.

I have wished for a high-speed Acela Bombardier for a long time. Nice to see it but no O72 curves on my layout and way too expensive. Just going to run my MTH Genesis.
A lot of stuff. Some interesting building. I'll keep checking on eBay.
