“But I’m slightly put out by the fact that although there’s SuperBass in the fuel tender, there’s no mention of sound in the engine itself; the TMCC version has a big speaker right over the fuel tank, which I bet they have quietly eliminated in favor of all sound being in the tender.”
I don’t read it that way. Superbass is being “added.” I would bet that there is sound in the engine.

Superbass is being “added.” I would bet that there is sound in the engine. Forrest, I'd be happy to defer to your greater knowledge and optimism. My take on this is that they can't describe this engine as having a "dual" sound system if the sounds are the same from each speaker. But putting sounds in a diesel fuel tender is basically the same as what we are used to having in steamers. And when Lionel has made a steamer that has a speaker in the boiler shell as well as the tender, they have always made that very clear. I've probably got cynical from the number of catalog weasel words Lionel has used in the recent past, but "added" can mean extra to what's already there or merely a different substitute for it.
I'll be very happy to be proved wrong! And I take heart from something JDaddy has mentioned before, long before this catalog turned up, and now further up in this thread:
I am not quite happy with Ryan. After 2 pitchers of beers and a couple of shots, he lead me astray! And I quote " We will not make the UP veranda turbine again due to its high die cast tooling cost and electronic complexity to assemble" … ah yeah... thanks for the tip... I should have bought him a higher proof whiskey!
Somebody had second thoughts . . .

I looked at the catalog online and there is nothing of any interest to me, but that's not unusual. There's been almost nothing of interest for me from Lionel for the last few years.

To me this is a remarkable catalog continuing the recent practice of a lot of different sorts of products for varied niches within the hobby, none of which will probably sell in the thousands (except the sets) or tens of thousands the way products did in the 1920 through 2000 or so eras. The hobby is smaller and people are very particular about what they want. Just read the comments on line. And people believe that catalogs should be perfect (just like the rest of us ). And people believe that a few lemons or bad experiences predict the entire product line. I've bought dozens of products in the last 5-10 years (maybe only 2-5 per year recently). No problems so far, so my experience with QC is it's fine overall. Perhaps because I use Charles Ro lately and they know what they are doing in terms of both products and shipping. Not everyone is as fortunate as is documented from time to time. Shipping damage has become a big problem for many people, particularly in the last year. I think we know why. The USPS and UPS/Fedex, etc. are incredibly stressed out in terms of staffing and just plain demand/pressure. I think the comment about most of us being older and having everything we really can justify is right on the money. Age brings cynicism and lack of enthusiasm for things that used to bring joy in many cases. One of the prices of long life. Carpe diem, since the number of diems is ever decreasing. Find some joy somewhere. I like the catalog, by the way. If I didn't have so many trains, I'd be buying the John Bull, the GN Veranda, the New Haven Acela, the New Haven PAs, the NYC Mohawk and the Pacemaker boxcar set. As it is, maybe just a few Area 51 things . Here's the Charles Ro price list. To get the best early pricing you need to go to the website, add the item to the cart and then you see the early buy price, for those who haven't done this previously. 1. Really like the Acela series. Is 4 motors necessary ? Anyway it's simplified and great looking but the size and price to big for me. 2. Love the John Bull set. Though it would not be more than a shelf queen for me. Hard to justify the price. 3. They seem to like the walking brakeman stuff. Why not put the hero boy on a Polar Express passenger car and have him walk ? 4. No new Thomas stuff ? Hey guy's Bachman is expanding their line. Somebody is buying this stuff. Take a closer look... 5. We do a lot of display hours here in Ford country. So the water tower is on my list. ( This might look good on your desk a Ford J daddy )
6. I like the look of the Angela Trotta Thomas building. Way over priced. 7. Then again I like the cabin with the flickering lights and sound. I'll get this and add a seuth smoke unit to it.
Side note , I tried the voice commands on my Blutooth Polar Express engine, works great and no extra charge. I think the kids will like it.

And one thing I absolutely love are the Wings of Angel cars! Fantastic! Not too lewd, but respectfully appealing!!!
I should have purchased these from the beginning:
John, I think every man cannot resist these cars, LOL!! I make no apologies... I have them all. 😊

Looked over the catalog, nothing I am really excited about... not sure if feelings come from the the selection of products or the disastrous quality control of recent years. The products look good in the catalog, but the end product is unpredictable and inconsistent at best. Maybe consumers would feel more confident if Lionel focused more money and resources on product development and quality control rather than marketing and entering the crowded low end HO market.

So I did some thinking last night on the GN Pacific and I am going to pass. Its not that Lionel did not try well... maybe... yes it does tick me off a bit that they could have tried a little harder: Case in point here is the prototype photo of the Class H3/4 GN 4-6-2 that was loosely modeled off of? And hear is Lionel's proposed release: So lets start : 1) Could they not at lease put the heavy 3 truck bogies on the tender like this thing deserves? 2) So I notice one dome looks accurate but why did they stop there? 3) The bell could have been moved reward like the NKP version? 4) If the tooling was modified, why not change the fire box to a Belpaire type? 5) I really hope they get the green right and mask around the domes. 6) The head light and tender light is an easy fix... brass fixtures everywhere 7) If they put the scale Atlantic pilot wheels on it and a better western style pilot on the front... that would help. 8) Looks like no blackened drivers for this one either. 9) Hopefully this does not come out with a pea green boiler Well I guess my taste have changed over the years? But for 1200 plus dollars I will start looking for a 3rd Rail version.

I was hoping for the C&O/WM 1309. I didn’t see it. So, I will save my money, maybe it will be in the next catalog, or maybe 3rd Rail will make one. It is strange to see Lionel make the Acela again, and even stranger for them to make it in 8 different liveries. And If I were Lionel I would have made it even simpler and cheaper than the first version, put two motors in the front engine, and call it done. There is no reason to have two motors at both ends, there are not many cars to pull, just more to go wrong. Also, the VL 2-10-10-2. Surprised to see this. It’s is a reissue of one of the first VL locos right? I thought VL was supposed to be new tooling with new features, that doesn’t seem to be the case here? With all the troubles I am seeing people have with Lionel locos lately, IMO the Lionel pool is still closed, it needs a thorough cleaning. I am not ordering anything.

Gee Craig, tell it like it is.
JDaddy I had never paid attention to the real vs Lionel. First and only Pacific is first engine I got 70+ years ago. Beautiful engine and Lionel is not close. Agree with you... Sunset time.
