I am tempted by the S1, but I am not sure Lionel is done with the parade of screw ups yet. So, I think I will continue to stay out of the Lionel pool for now:

MAYBE the T&P offerings. We'll see I really like the GP7's … were they yellow like the catalog or orange like the American Flyer locomotives I have on the shelf?

I’ll wait for the Zebra GP9s to come out again. Trainz Auction was selling these on their auction site last year and they were ending under 250... I missed out.

So trying to make a decision... looks like the S1 Calendar version, Texas and Pacific Ten wheeler, City of LA A-B-B units seemed to be calling my name!

A scale S1 could possibly manage to make me exercise the plastic. Those ghosted illustrations of it heading each Legacy steam catagory of catalogs past has taunted me for years. Is it a Vision Line offering?

Hi Bruce - Not Legacy and not sure why? price is much lower than the 2-8-8-2. $1,250 from my LHS. Vision pop off steam valve will be available. No horn … not sure why? Whistle will be available... Lionel's offering... I don't mind. It's going to be a great engine... I'm in!

I remember - and the catalog fine print confirms - that Ryan K. said each engine would have multiple horn options (catalog says three) and indeed a couple of alternative whistle sounds. This even though he said the prototype had no steam whistle at all so they were not putting whistle smoke in but a pop off/safety valve instead. The latter feature works very well on the VL Niagara.

I meant to say Not Vision Line... and I am not sure why? I did not hear clarification if this locomotive would have the "select a whistle option" Were all locomotives going forward (even Diesels) have this option?
I have the TMCC version and it will be a tough act to beat. Usually I sell one to upgrade for the other, but I am going to keep the old one too.
sorry for the shaky video... its hard to hold the phone and blow the remote on the whistle at the same time

Hey Gary - note the draw bar gap on this one is PULLED TIGHT at point 0:32! I don't even have the O 130 curves to run it... so it just goes back and forth on the straights

Sorry Gary, but the coal load in the tender looks outdated, like a 400e from the 1930’s, is it metal? I wonder of the new one will have a more realistic coal pile, or the same one? I think I know the answer.

Daddy, I also like the S1 calendar version, however, I am not in the running for engines this year. But... regarding the City of LA. Sunset came out with their version of this engine last year and while the body was nothing special, the pilot had the slots and made a huge difference in my opinion. The new version of the Lionel catalog states the City of LA will have a newly tooled pilot with slots. Does not seem like a big deal, but from the front it looks pretty cool. Charlie

At the Zoom meeting Wednesday night, someone asked about the 2-8-8-2 engine that is being offered. It was built by N and W in the Roanoke Shops and they were so successful that they sold a number of the engines to the Virginian, Union Pacific, Pennsylvania, and a few others.
Versions of the 2-8-8-2 Y6-B and Y-3 have been offered by different manufacturers. We have a number of N and W engines In the 2-8-8-4 configuration and are not anxious to add more. We also have two Virginian, one of which has problems. If we order the engine, it will be a Virginian and we will repair and sell the older one.
Right now, the dollars in the bank are more exciting than another high priced engine.
