Hi folks,
Just read through a Mr. Muffin's Trains trains email blast sent over the 4th of July weekend... and there's a short, one-liner teaser that mentions the new Lionel 2020 Volume 2 Catalog is due to be released Wednesday, July 15th.
Not sure how I feel about this. Usually I'm at least "interested" to see what Big L will catalog. But not this time. Not sure if it's because the pandemic derailed some 2020 train activities... or perhaps it's just because I'm tired of the quality and color problems Lionel has been delivering of late. I pre-ordered nothing from the 2020 Signature Catalog aside from the Freedom Train add-on cars to complete that train -- at least for my purposes (since Lionel is finally delivering the observation car). I'd also like to see how closely Lionel's Blue Goose 4-8-4 Northern steamer matches MTH's powder blue passenger cars, because I love those Lionel Legacy ATSF Northern steamers from several years back. But the key phrase there is "from several years back". And there's absolutely no guarantee Lionel will deliver similar craftsmanship and Railsounds in the new Northerns due out in a couple of months -- not to mention what are the chances Lionel's powder blue is even remotely close to MTH's powder blue. Won't know until we see it. And that's how I feel about lots of train goodies these days. Just no faith in the catalog illustrations anymore, because I don't believe the importers even know what their factories are gonna deliver.
In any event, I can't seem to get too excited about another catalog (yet). And the catalog will be what it's gonna be whether I'm excited about it or not. So we shall see.
Just sayin'....

Lionel catalogs have become a double edged sword for me. On one hand, they often announce newly tooled modern freight cars that really appeal to me. But on the other hand, there's that gamble of not knowing what's going to be delivered (mainly in terms of color). Nonetheless, I always get excited for a new catalog. I just can't help myself - Jason

I was going to write , “Oh he of little faith,” BUT Jason came thru.
Don’t I remember something about colors just a few months ago?

I don’t need anything but I still will take a looksy at it. Same here. But of course sometimes there are things you don't know you need until somebody makes them.

I don't know what to say... I was told that there were / was going to be some jaw droppers in this catalog... like a NP North Coast Limited set.
I would have to clear out some stock here if they made that set.
Never say Never...
I did order a Brass Hybrid GS1... that one order put me out from ordering anything new this year. So its got to be something I really want!
Hmm, a set of GN Empire Builder passenger cars may open my wallet too.

My take on new catalogs is a little different from most.
Every year I like to see what the car companies are bringing to market… but I have no intention of buying a new car every year. Same goes for computers, bicycles, camera equipment and the list goes on. I view the catalogs as more of information gathering and entertainment.
As has been written above, I have way more trains than I need but… not the trains l want. Meaning, I did make purchases along the way since 1995, but my interests were different. Yes, I probably made some “impulse” purchases, but overall, I bought what interested me… at the time.
My interest has turned to passenger trains, specifically, streamline steam, named trains. Next would be first generation streamline diesels.
The point being, there are trains that now interest me that did not before or there are trains that still have not been made, and for that reason, I keep an interest in the new manufacture’s offerings.
So keep the catalogs coming.

For many years, I looked forward to each new Lionel Catalog. That has all changed with so many quality issues. They will have to earn my business back the old fashioned way, get off their duff and make a product worth buying.

I remember looking forward to the catalogs, but a time came and not from the many inept products put out there. But I have an era, railroads that I depict and the engines that were in that era. I have all the rolling stock I will ever need. My list is short on what I want or need to add to the layout. 2 engines and cars. They're out there, just don't see them yet on secondary market, or they're overpriced. What I'm more interested is adding to scenery, buildings, medium and small structures. More newly posed figures not done before. When the catalog comes out, I'll glance at it, but no thoughts on purchasing anything.

I'm looking forward to the catalog. From the prior webcasts, should have a good deal of PRR and NYC. I'm hopeful for a lot of UP and Mopac. Really want them to finish the entire heritage series. (It may take several sets of runs to accomplish). Would also be hopeful for Illinois Central Deathstars.

I just can't help myself - Jason I hear you about the excitement. Regardless of various grumpy "I have too much: or "I'll never buy because...." we all secretly can't wait to grab a beer or coffee and flip through that new catalog. It is what keeps us all in the hobby, it is in our blood. Count me in even though our COVID pay deferral is making a pre-order tough, we can dream.

So keep the catalogs coming. Charlie I'm in that club as well, problem being that Lionel made much better passenger trains in the past than they do now. Some of the UP Excursion cars are good but for real quality it's Scott Mann's products and I have to be selective about them. (I'm not going in for anything from MTH any more other than spare parts and Atlas lost a lot of credibility with delivery delays.) Streamline diesels are one area where Lionel has done well with Legacy sound and control. Anyway I confess I'll look at the catalog even if more for amusement than any expectation of finding something I really want.
