I'll simply state the obvious that the engines' colour is way off. And probably the simplest QC is getting a matching/correct paint job. How about providing a CORRECT color sample so we can all see what it is supposed to be.

Forget the prototype, let's make the color illustrations in Lionel's catalog the standard by which these models are painted. For example, when a Canadian Pacific locomotive is advertised in the catalog wearing Soo/CP red it arrives in Soo/CP red, not neon safety orange red. Consistency with different production runs would also be nice. I have models produced by MTH and Atlas a decade apart, yet they maintain consistent color, not sure why Lionel can't do this.
I'm glad this forum is willing to allow members to share their frustration with Lionel's bad QC and dysfunctional color selections. The criticism is really helpful to other hobbyist so they can avoid these defective paint schemes.
The other forum which is partially owned by Lionel completely censors anyone who point these problems. I'm not sure deleting your already shrinking customer base is a good long term business strategy.

For those who are having trouble discerning the color differences, here are the RGB breakouts from Photoshop:
The original artwork/illustration: RGB (120, 133, 61)
The as-delivered model: RGB (189, 217, 69)
The target color enthusiasts were hoping for: RGB (138, 189, 114)
So NOW can we all admit like grown men and women that the ball was dropped big-time on this model?

Is this the color you are going to have harmonyard paint yours to now. How much is it going to cost to have it repainted. Looks like a lot of labor involved to take it apart and remove all the detail part to paint it then put it all back together.

That’s not something published. Doesn’t matter if it’s a traction tire swap, or a full on re-paint.

I saw one in person who brought it over to my place to look at and ask my opinion. The color is so far off when he took it out of the box he decided to send it back. He has told me he has sent back at least 7 Locomotives due to mechanical and paint issues in the past several years. He has sworn off anything Lionel, can you blame him?

There might yet be a silver lining with this “as delivered” custom-run. But we’ll need to see for sure when the AEC glow-in-the-dark set arrives later this year. The glowing green of this Berk MIGHT be more appropriate for a set hauling radioactive rolling stock. Wouldn’t that be cool!!!

Dave Did he buy these as a pre-order as sight unseen, I did it one time back in the mid 90s with MTH. My fault for not understanding how it worked. It said in the catalog it might not be exact as the photo. I didn't know it was a photo of an HO model. I never ordered another one that way. And I have one of the notorious zinc pest MTH Hiawatha's. that was made back in the late 90s I won't buy anything sight unseen.

Okay no dollar figures but what would you guess would be the labor/man hours involved to do the job. it looks like it a lot of hours to take it apart remove all those detail parts. paint and put it all back together. From what you have posted on the other forum I know you have regular job and do this kind of work in your spare time. Also know that you are highly recommended and do high quality work.

It would be less bother to order a Pilot version if available and start from scratch!

For someone who’s a novice, then, sure, it’s a lot of labor hours. But I paint for a living, model trains, classic cars, don’t matter, ….prep is the key, the more items you take off, the better the finish will be. When I paint models, it’s done with the same techniques, & materials used by the factory. No guess work here,…..as far as hours, it’s a guess until I have one in front of me to digest a plan. …
