This campaign of purging OGR members with minimal reason and explanation is just a money grab. I am hearing reports from former members being offered their membership back if they subscribe to a paid OGR subscription....practice is indicative of a failing business. I don't know how a forum about model trains became so divisive. The vast majority of the OGR members are great people, it's too bad their management is so toxic. Without a doubt, the membership is largely composed of good folks like us here. But everyone has a different toleration level of putting up with BS.
When you ask about how a model train forum became so divisive... that's an easy answer. BAD MANAGEMENT. I recall not that long ago a new custom layout-building company was making its way onto the scene, and I was very much impressed. And since the original charter of OGR was talking about "everything trains", I posted about this new upcoming company. I wrote positively about them... even included my own photos of their fabulous work. And each time I posted, the threads would get deleted.
Turns out I was not allowed to post about this new company BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT A PAYING SPONSOR FOR OGR. When I spoke to the principals of the company about this, their response was they didn't feel the need to have their name in a blinking lights banner across the top of the web page. Quite understandable. So for months their name was persona non gratta on that forum. But that all changed when Mike Reagan left Lionel and joined the company as their east-coast director. Mike had a decent relationship with the OGR powers, and just like that... the company magically became an OGR sponsor. Oh... the name of the company? TW Trainworx. Fabulous company... great people. But until you pay-to-play over at OGR, they don't know you. Sorry... but this hobby doesn't need that kind of BS.
Paying for an OGR forum membership only gets you the opportunity to be a ready made captive audience for OGR’s “Sponsors.” OGR does not care if their forum members enjoy the OGR experience or get something out of it. Why? Because OGR forum members are not OGR’ customers, OGR’s sponsors are their customers!

Five pages and counting. Got to love it, that a certain website/forum can invoke such passion. I've said my peace and will speak no more of them, only referencing that "OTHER FORUM" If a interesting topic comes up.

This thread shows why OGF is the best. This thread could not have taken place on any other O gauge model train forum. Far different opinions have been expressed here about OGR both pro and con. Everyone here just stuck to the substance of the argument, reported on their experiences and it was fine with everyone. As for the NJ Highrailer guys on OGR; I believe that they do enjoy special treatment as they have promoted many OGR events for the forum owner. Take for instance the "ORG Forum Breakfast" gathering at Allentown, the dinners at York and the events at their layout location. To my knowledge no NJHR member was ever banned but I cannot say that none of their posts were ever deleted. Regardless of the conversation, I like the people here, over there and always willing to discuss all facets of the O gauge hobby but today this is the only model train forum that I am active on. What? The NJ HiRailers club has nothing to do with the Allentown breakfast Two of us attend but what does that mean I still have to pay for breakfast Its called being friendly. There were two members banned on OGR because they wouldnt budge on a request I have had Many posts deleted there but I didnt have to hold my breath and turn blue. Didnt know that if you attend a dinner you get special treatment because I also always attend the LCCA dinner and the DCS dinner. Maybe MTh or the LCCA should give me some free stuff LOL

... I believe that they do enjoy special treatment as they have promoted many OGR events for the forum owner. Take for instance the "ORG Forum Breakfast" gathering at Allentown ... Just a point of clarification... the OGR Forum Breakfast is actually a bit of a misnomer. OGR (i.e., the company) has nothing to do with the breakfast per se. Sure... most of the attendees are members of the OGR forum. But that's more a tradition from days gone by, when one of the OGR members facilitates getting a handle on the number of folks planning to attend the breakfast -- especially since its location has moved from the Hamilton Family Diner to the Fairgrounds Ritz BBQ location after COVID. I have always been welcome to attend the breakfast... and I indeed did for a few shows after I parted company with the OGR forum elders, who never attend the breakfast anyway much less the Allentown show at all now. But since I have a booth at the Allentown show these days, I tend to be quite busy early Saturday morning putting final touches on the booth -- just about when folks are enjoying a hearty breakfast at the Ritz.

Yes, it is despised because of the way the treat people worse then cattle and couple that with the blatant arrogance of the OGR staff as if they are the center of the O gauge hobby and are movers and shakers to be feared and respected. In reality, OGR operates out of a small suite between Chen's Garden Chinese Restaurant and the Black Dagger Tattoo Shop in rural Mountain Home Arkansas. Copy and paste the urls into your browser. www.google.com/maps/place/1310+Eastside+Center+Ct+Ste+6,+Mountain+Home,+AR+72653/@36.351692,-92.3637175,21z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x87d1dbc0e471c519:0xd26896fb490c0868!8m2!3d36.3517994!4d-92.3637433!16s%2Fg%2F11rnfb4bq0?entry=ttu And for a street view of the mighty OGR headquarters: www.google.com/maps/@36.3517395,-92.363167,3a,15y,273.52h,90.38t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sRtok60TYdDN-4FJBCUK2xw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DRtok60TYdDN-4FJBCUK2xw%26cb_client%3Dsearch.revgeo_and_fetch.gps%26w%3D96%26h%3D64%26yaw%3D332.75162%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

Great Expectations meets Much Ado about Nothing (Dickens meets Shakespeare) just to put a literary spin on the periodic OGRe cleansing ritual.

Even though I was shown the exit a few years ago I still visit the forum. Still a lot of good info posted there and it is cool to see other folks layouts. As far as the MTJ, a nasty forum to visit if you are a MTH supporter. Bill www.youtube.com/user/seayakbill As a whole, I think the O Gauge Hobby has moved long past the MTH vs Lionel stuff. I don't think that anyone really gives it much thought.

I really despise forums that create too many sub-forums and try to categorize the posts too much. Posts not in the main forums get so few eyes on them. Few people ever click on the subforums.

I really despise forums that create too many sub-forums and try to categorize the posts too much. Posts not in the main forums get so few eyes on them. Few people ever click on the subforums. Then if you violate the posting rule for that obscure sub-folder, you post will get deleted, if you are lucky. If you are unlucky, your post will be deleted and then your forum membership will be canceled and your subscription money pocketed.
