You know the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beer holder", or something like that. What locomotives do you find to be not so good looking? This monstrosity is up there. Not even sure what it is, who made it and why they made it look so bad. The Ugly Cycle might explain why some ugly locomotives actually start to look good to some people.

Why is it that I have no locos that I consider UGLY? Possibly because I am easily pleased. But this guy from somewhere called "Tauranga" in New Zealand has made a science of the subject in which he rubbishes engines from various countries, including his own:
And there are some real howlers in his collection. BTW, "Trainspotter" is equivalent to a term of abuse in the former British Empire.

Sorry to some as this may seem sacrilegious, but I have never found the long hood diesels like the RS-1, RS-3, and RS-11 appealing. Topping my list of ugliest is the FM Trainmaster. Again, my apologies to those who are fans.

That is truly, madly, deeply, very ugly - where do engineers get these ideas from?

That is truly, madly, deeply, very ugly - where do engineers get these ideas from? Yup, I think necessity was the mother of invention there, not good looks! It ran (not well) on a 30" gauge military arsenal railway in England - they were probably trying to cram as much traction power into a small loco as they could. Dave

I like them myself.

Here is another. That looks like one of Brunel's broad-gauge locomotives run on the Great Western in Britain. Might not be, but certainly very reminiscent of the type. Remember this from the old Matchbox "Models of Yesteryear" range: A survivor from my ill-spent youth, The Duke of Connaught, another GWR broad-gauge design.

I have had several TM in my long years of buying trains, but they are not the most attractive or did I consider them ugly. My most ugly would be the VO1000, and many of the streamlined engines from the 30's, 40's and 50's. Think the Crusader, T1, 49er, Mercury, anything Traindiesel owns, and many others.

After seeing the McKeen car, that definitely belongs on this thread!!!

As soon as I saw this I thought of my kids playing with their diecast Thomas trains. Emily was one of my daughter's favorites.

The British who I love have very few good looking locomotives. There may be a few good looking locomotives but if your honest, not too many. They (Britain) may be the king of the ugliest Locomotives ever built!!
