I have had several TM in my long years of buying trains, but they are not the most attractive or did I consider them ugly. My most ugly would be the VO1000, and many of the streamlined engines from the 30's, 40's and 50's. Think the Crusader, T1, 49er, Mercury, anything Traindiesel owns, and many others. Dave After seeing the McKeen car, that definitely belongs on this thread!!! Why, you, I oughtta….!!!!! I only own pretty trains I’ll have you know!

The British who I love have very few good looking locomotives. There may be a few good looking locomotives but if your honest, not too many. They (Britain) may be the king of the ugliest Locomotives ever built!! Dave Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. I have always been partial to their very sharp streamlined locomotives; the Battle of Britain class Pacifics, a personal favorite, are but one example:

Wartime austerity always went with pure function, not style. Here's a face only a designer could love - the British Southern Railway Q1 with absolutely no additional parts. Yes, there are models available. www.bulleidlocos.org.uk/_q1/q1fullsize.aspxDave

Ugly or not, Lionel claims this 49’ers paint scheme was the second most popular pre-order for that year’s BTO production run of Challenger locomotives!!!

Bizarre! It looks much better on the actual streamliner, but this is just wrong! Dave

When I was a lad, I actually had a hard-page children's book with a 3/4 view of this locomotive on the cover - it was low-relief, semi3D. The smokebox door was a flexible squeaker and made a horrible "whistle" sound when you pressed it. Dave

My impression is that streamlining in Britain was embraced for function, i.e. drastic reduction in wind resistance and drag to yield efficiency and higher speeds. Meanwhile, in the U.S. it was largely for aesthetics, an effort in the 1930’s to rekindle interest in passenger travel by rail. Carl Gray of the UP and Ralph Budd at the CB&Q lit the fire here in 1934 with the M-10000 and the Pioneer Zephyr; shrouding of American steam came soon after. New designs and new materials got them the look they were looking for. Meanwhile, locos like the LNER's Mallard we’re setting speed records in the UK. Lionel introduced their version of the M-10000 in time for Christmas, 1934:

How about this one? Only a mother could love it! But it did the job. Haysi Railroad Locomotive #1 EMD "B" unit outfitted with operator's cab and controls, extra windows and headlight. Actually still exists at the TVM rusting away. Sad. (Click images to enlarge)

The guy lost me when he said that Brightline and Amtrak streamlined engines were ugly, not to mention the Trainmaster.

Sorry to some as this may seem sacrilegious, but I have never found the long hood diesels like the RS-1, RS-3, and RS-11 appealing. Topping my list of ugliest is the FM Trainmaster. Again, my apologies to those who are fans. Whoa!!! You just shot yourself in both feet. Calling the postwar icon FM Train Master ugly just because you don't like one or two paint schemes is like folks today saying, "Challenger steamers are ugly because they don't like Lionel making one with the 49'er paint scheme." Please don't confuse the paint scheme with the locomotive design. Through the decades, Lionel has made many FM Train Masters. And very few have had rather bland designs. Some liveries have been quite striking.
