They have had UPS shipping at York for a number of years and this situation is just outrageous. The UPS store should have known or been notified that they could have this issue. I certainly hope everyone gets compensated. It must be in the thousands. Something like this could result in the store closing. I hope not.

Well, I got the bad news this morning. My box of trains and related items I bought at York are gone forever.
According to the guy at the UPS store that shipped packages from York, the facility that was holding the packages for fraud alerts “disposed” of the packages after an unknown period of time. No contact to the people waiting for them or to the store that shipped them. My only recourse now is a claim for the items I had shipped. However I was told to send them a list with prices directly to the store to be reimbursed for the contents. Not through the UPS website. I asked them to email me the process he described so I could have a reference to respond to and to have a record of what happened.
Apparently this happened to all the packages shipped from the York Meet. He was in the process of calling all those that shipped items from the Fairgrounds. It sounds like the store is going to take the hit for this fiasco. Now the wait begins to see if I ever get my money back. I’ll be looking for alternatives to ship my purchases from York in the future. The facility?! It was part of UPS wasn't it? They make it sound as though it was some clandestine operation by some unknown/unauthorized special OPS group. TCA York folks should look into a replacement shipper for future meets and show UPS the door. Keep an eye on Ebay you may have a chance to buy your items again! Is the Eastern Division of TCA going to make a statement or comment about this or will they pretend it didn't happen? After all who engaged UPS for this gig? But look on the bright side at least it was not a kidney transplant that you were waiting for! .

I've been shipping from every York Meet that was held since we moved to Southern California without incident. But with this debacle it's been hard to get any solid info of what happened. UPS customer service has been non existent, even beyond the useless automated system. I tried a couple different operators and kept getting referred to the store at York the package was shipped from. After a few days of trying to get through to them they finally answered and told me about the fraud alert issues. Then they said 'Don't worry, you'll get your package'. On Friday I was told it was disposed of after an unknown number of days. They also said it happened to every package sent from the Fairgrounds from Friday through Saturday afternoon. But I haven't found any other people this happened to. I don't know if I'm being fed a bunch of horse hockey or someone is covering up incompetence or both.
I'm sure if the package was thrown away and some dumpster diver probably fished it out by now. I'm not worried so much about the trains, I can find them again or buy something else provided I get reimbursed. I have sent the email list of items and receipts to the store for reimbursement as they requested. Now I'll see if that actually happens. If not done in a reasonable amount of time I'll have to take the next step.

Brian, what a mess!!! Honestly, something doesn't add up here. One would think there'd be a groundswell of complaints from "all" the people who shipped trains from the York Fairgrounds those days.
Failing that, you're at the mercy of information (or disinformation) coming from UPS. That's always frustrating. And with that, our confidence in accurate information drops exponentially.
We have all become victims of technology nowadays. When it works -- and thankfully it usually does -- we're happy and often take things for granted. However, when technology doesn't work, there seems to be a complete vacuum of accurate information. So we're then at the mercy of human intervention and all the inaccuracies that brings to the table, as each conversation brings a lack of confidence that people really know what's going on behind the scenes.
On one hand, UPS often offers folks the ability to track the exact whereabouts of their package on a map, when the package is on the delivery truck enroute to its final destination. While here on the other hand, they can't seem to tell you exactly why your package might have been disposed of -- if indeed it truly was just your package or "all" the packages shipped from the Fairgrounds. Something smells rotten.
Please keep us posted.

One thing that has not been discussed here is the liability of these shipping companies. UPS and FedEx have commercial freight shipping sections and then there are those related to mostly small residential and commercial shipping of items. When you ship an item with UPS you automatically get to answer the question on the shipping form “Valuation”. In the case of UPS they include a value of $100 in the shipping cost unless you specify an additional value which has an additional chase. I think FdEx works about the same way asking for valuation. USPS includes $50.00 of insurance, for Priority Mail and perhaps First Class. and I do mean insurance, you do have the option of purchasing addiational “Insurance” for a fee above the shipping costs.
Let me make something perfectly clear. UPS and FedEx do not sell insurance for packages shipped they ask for “Declared Value”. USPS on the other hand will sell you additional “Insurance” for packages that you are having them shipped. Both services provide tracking information.
There is a distinct difference between “Declared Value” and “Insurance”. If you did not pay for additional “Declared Value” you may only get $100 per package regardless of the value of the package.

Surprisingly I received a reply to my claim email from the UPS store in York and the UPS Capital Customer Support this morning. On the claim page it listed my contact information and this little comment:
Merchandise Description Trains
Additional Comments UPS salvaged this package because they thought it was fraud, which it was not. Told by our corporate manager to put in claim for full value because UPS salvaged the package and wasn't supposed to be.
Hoping for a miracle.

... These outfits seem to correspond in a language of their own. And despite the powerful tools we have in our hands, we've seemingly lost our ability to communicate. The verb "salvage" means to rescue from destruction. Then they recommend putting a claim in the full value, because -- and there's that pesky word again -- they SALVAGED the package which shouldn't have been.
So is UPS using the word "salvage" to imply destroyed? But if they actually saved it from destruction (we hope), why are they asking you to put a claim in for the full value? And if they're really using the word "salvage" to imply rescued, then why would they comment, "... because UPS salvaged the package and wasn't supposed to be". With that I ask, "Why wasn't it supposed to be?"
At best, it's very confusing to say the least.
Hoping for the best for ya, Brian... and anyone else who's experienced this mess.

I do work for one of the shipping companies and it does not throw away packages unless it is obviously of no value . It happens that packages loose the shipping label, or multiple packages in a shipments get split up, damaged, partial damage or other issues why it can't make it to the intended recipient. What happens to them-at least where I work, they get shipped to a liquidator and the company gets a percentage of the proceeds. I dont think the stuff is separated, it is just sold in lots (it has been a while ,I am not sure if the process has changed)

This whole mess is confusing. I haven’t got a straight answer from the beginning. Other than what I posted there’s no mention on how or how long the claim will proceed. I sent them receipts of my purchases and the links to the product pages for pictures of the items. Luckily I had electronic receipts. A cash transaction from a member may have been tougher to prove for reimbursement. The big mystery to me is why my package was given an “alternate tracking number” somewhere between York and a hub in California then delivered to a different hub for its final resting place. Was it stolen and rerouted? Was the alternate number the red flag? How did this supposedly happen to every package shipped from the Fairgrounds? I know the box is gone, I just hope the claim verbiage means I’ll be getting reimbursed.

I've had items shipped via Fed Ex that were turned over to the US Post Office for final delivery, tracked them to the Flagstaff post office (I live in Flagstaff) and then, rather than putting them out for delivery, get sent to Albuquerque for a few days (330 miles east) then returned to Flagstaff and delivered. I also had a g scale live steam locomotive held up at my local UPS store saying it was "damaged" because the loco had leaked a little oil onto the box. When I went to the store, claimed the box, and opened it for inspection and found nothing wrong, I was told that I had to give it back to them for a return because it was damaged. I simply refused to give it back to them and walked out. Customer service is anything but anymore. I'm sorry for your troubles!

From my research on your items, they are rare collectibles worth at least 1 million dollars. Make sure your claim has this amount. Hit them in the wallet so it dont happen again. THE MOFOS!

The Teamsters just signed a new 5 year contract with UPS. UPS says that by the end of the new contract, the average UPS full-time driver will make about $170,000 annually in pay and benefits. Maybe there is a good reason why TRAINZ ships with FEDEX OMG, I went to college for nothing. Of course, they will pass the cost of these overpaid employees to the consumer. Which is why I don't buy any got to haves anymore. Have everything I want. This economy and those who made it can go suck an egg....if they can afford it. All the things in the "Soylent Green" movie are coming true. Only the rich can afford real food. The rest of us eat pink slime hamburgers and veggie burgers passed off as real beef. SOYLENT RED!
