I am running a set I just purchased from Adam. GS-4 Northern #4449 with 5 cars. WOW does this thing smoke. Once around the layout and it looks like a major thick fog moved in. Which one is it? There are two Lionel versions that normally smoke out a room very quickly, one Legacy and one VL, and an MTH version that is not far short of the same effect! The MTH Imperial one.

Adam, Good stuff, great variety. Are you using the model you just completed? Alfred

Curtis, Pay no attention to the operator behind the smoke. Now that it is getting close to Christmas, you can consider scented smoke - Brian has a favorite that I can't remember. I'm quite traditional and use conventional pellets. Alfred

This isn't on the track at the moment (but nothing is), instead it's in the shops, and I am nostalgic for when it first arrived:

I am not sure what that engineer is doing but I believe the fireman is like a former 7UP truck driver that I always had problems with. He would tinker with the injector pump and then adjust his mirrors so he could see smoke coming out of the stacks. Finally ended up putting a tamper kit on the injection pump to stop him. That fireman has to be doing the same thing with the oil from the tender. Greatest part is, since I can't find the door to leave, at least it smells great!

Working on a barrel load to camouflage a track cleaning car . That's a great idea - I'll have to keep that one in mind for my layout. Dave

No Trains and No Tracks..... I took down my Halloween layout today. Plan to start building the Christmas layout soon. Maybe a week or two.

On the tracks - A variety of mixed freight consists headed by 1060 Scout w/ tender, 250 2-8-2 PRR w/ tender, and 671 S2 Turbine w/ 6-wheel truck tender. I’ve been under the tracks – underneath the layout to make adjustments for sloppy building of the structure. I quickly built the layout structure (on sawhorses) in 2005; and since that time the Northeast corner has been unnecessarily elevated, which makes an unwanted grade. I did not use leveling hardware on the sawhorse legs. As I have been making improvements and running more trains, I have noticed that the grade is causing problems. For the past two nights, I have been using a handsaw to cut off lengths of the 2 x 4 legs. (Getting lots of exercise, laying on my side/ belly, and crouching in uncomfortable positions.) I am finished and the result is a level layout – now trains can maintain nearly constant speed over the outer loop. More adjustments to come – on the elevated reversing track section.

Tonight... I'm inspired by seeing a fine A-B-A set. So this WILL be on the tracks first chance I get. Basically the A units are Lionel E9s and the middle B unit is an MTH E8 body on a Lionel E7 SuperBass frame and innards:
For whatever reason Lionel has never made an E8 B unit. Basically this conversion is mostly successful - smoke, lights and sound all work as they should. The MTH body is not an exact match for the Lionels color-wise - but it has the right number of portholes!
This is the UP prototype I am trying to model - including by the addition of working beacons, the radio antennae and, eventually, the MU hoses:
P.S. To their credit, for once, Lionel made these particular A units with prototypical ditch lights rather than a Mars Light. They actually work better than the Legacy lighting version of a Mars Light, which for whatever reason is inferior to TMCC lighting.
