Just received my N&W J Class Locomotive 603 today. Gotta say after minimal run time, this locomotive is a very nice addition to my layout. No out of the box issues and smokes very well. Heres a pic and a quick video for those interested. Sorry this is not an in depth look, I will leave that to the experts. As for me I like it! -Pete

Pete- What would you say, would you get for passenger cars to match? Nice by the way...

Yes, the whistle sounds “right on” and the steam effects are great. A really nice looking locomotive!

This is what's nice about NOT pre-ordering... Lionel made half-a-dozen different models of J's this time. And now that they've hit the street, it's nice to see which model REALLY call your name. No hassles... no worries... no anxiety over "will they get it all right?"
Now, if I were to actually buy one of these J's (which I just might), I'd spring for either #746 or the American Freedom Train "what if" model. The other #6xx models in this batch are just wrong in terms of the stripe color -- especially for people who own previously-made N&W passenger cars by Lionel or MTH. Now if the N&W heavyweights in the same catalog as the locomotive are gonna be made to coordinate with the red color of the newest J-locomotive's stripe, then at least folks can say everything matches.
I can justify the "red stripe" on #746, because it seems very close to the color of the stripe used on the Post-War #746J that was part of a freight set. And the "red stripe" on the AFT is part of a "what if" offering for the largely red, white and blue Freedom Train. So that's every bit appropriate to have a red stripe.
Whatever the case... it appears these J locomotives have the best implementation of whistle-steam thus far.

Very nice, Pete.
Passenger cars, go for it. Christmas is just around the corner. Santa would approve.

Nice looking engine. Glad to see that Lionel got it right.
Now for the Cavalier set. We did not preorder either for the same reasons that David held off. When they come in and, IF they are okay, we will be very interested.
Any idea when the Cavalier set is due in?
Go for it Pete. You need the passenger cars.

The engine sounds great! The Whistle Steam is a nice feature. I thought about preordering one of these but I am glad I did not with the color issue with the stripe. I wonder what color the new Passanger cars will be that are supposed to go along with the new J. I am with David on this one... the color for #746 and the Freedom train are fine but with the other J's the color is not right especially if you were wanting it to match the previous runs of the passenger cars.

Lionel has many QC issues but remember without enough preorders, it ain't gonna get made.

Lionel has many QC issues but remember without enough preorders, it ain't gonna get made. And I guess I'm at the point in this hobby, where that's OK if insufficient pre-orders cause something to not get made. So be it. I'm now pretty much willing to pre-order IF AND ONLY IF a product is offered in a very specific, small-name railroad livery... in which case, I don't wanna risk missing out. A recent example would be the GP-35's, where I pre-ordered the Allegheny RR units. After all, the name of my layout is the Allegheny & Pacific Railway Company, so I couldn't really pass up locomotives in the Allegheny RR livery. That just wouldn't be right. By the time Charlie Ro published their "just in" email blast, those Allegheny RR GP-35's were sold-out. So something like that was worth pre-ordering. Aside from the small-name railroad liveries, there's really no need to pre-order because there are still sufficient numbers of larger dealers who order extra units beyond actual customer pre-orders. I understand mom-and-pop shops can't afford to do this, but guys like Charlie Ro, Trainworld and Nicholas Smith Trains (to name a few) always order extra's by the handful. And even guys like Mr. Muffins Trains order 1 or 2 extra's for most items. Now if those larger dealers start to ONLY place orders with Lionel that cover actual customer pre-orders, then that's a real game-changer... but it also impacts their ability to SELL a few extra's to folks who buy after products are delivered. So it's a double-edged sword. Ideally, Lionel should be the one who carries the extra inventory, because they're the one making the most profits in the supply chain. If that weren't the case, they wouldn't be doing it.

Lionel has many QC issues but remember without enough preorders, it ain't gonna get made. And that's the unfortunate side to all the manufacturers. Everyone gets on Lionel's case about BTO but they all do it. They just don't call it that.

Lionel and MTH cancel items each catalog so if you really want it a preorder is the way to go. Waiting for them to arrive at the store is fine providing it's not a must have item.
