Waiting for me at the LHS! Marty, Are you waiting to see what Lionel is going to do about the color of the stripe before picking it up? I don't blame you if you are. It has to be disappointing especially if you already have a previous set of Passanger cars and the engine does not match.

When Lionel recalls it to fix the stripe, I'll send it in.

Brought home the J yesterday. I hoped to get some pictures today but was in the basement all day working on the ceiling. Besides the stripe color the engine is very nice. My front boiler is slightly loose but rather than opening, I'll let Lionel fix it when they call them home to fix the stripe.
I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow. If I can get a test loop up I'll do a video. The whistle steam is outstanding!

Marty.......would you know if Lionel is going to send out a sort of recall notice to those who bought the J’s? Or do we have to keep aware of the fix through forum postings.

BTW I agree, despite the stripe controversy, this is one sweet running engine. This has to be the best reiteration of whistle smoke Lionel has produced to date!

From what I understand from the person I spoke with at the warehouse sale, there will be an announcement regarding the J and other recent cars with paint issues. While I'm not sure in what form, if I hear anything I will most certainly post here.

Good point on the class lights, Marty. I probably would never looked at that to you pointed out the comparison with the 606. It is a great sounding engine. It's hard to tell from the photos but I am guessing Lionel did not put Self-Adjust Drawbar on engine as the have done with some of their other engines and Passanger cars? Very nice comparison photos and video.

2 things to note that I found while shooting last night, the front of the boiler is slightly loose as is the shell from the frame. I checked the tightness of the screw holding the shell to the frame and they seemed tight. Since it's not affecting the operation of the engine, I will wait until it goes back for the paint issue to have these corrected (most likely they will because Lionel will have to remove both to fix the stripe).
The stripe lines up perfectly and the detail is very nice. I love the crew talk on this as it is different but since from what I understand they had the engineer from the 611 in for these, why in heck did you NOT do road number specific call outs? I'm definitely happy with this engine. I'll be even happier when the shells are fixed but for now I'll operate it and enjoy what I have.

Looks like a nice engine... minus the problems.
We model (loosely speaking) the N and W. Last year we returned the Polar Express cars after being excited about them for months. They were our main Christmas present to each other and “Do not open until a Christmas” applied. But with all the talk about the problems they had, we had more apprehension than anything else. And they were a mess.
After that, we were simply no longer willing to accept Lionel’s junk NOR TO ORDER IT. I did break down and order the PE RPO car from Pat and it was wrong.
The Lionel catalog was perfection for N and W/NS fans. We ignored it. We would love to have a new J but only if it was properly done OUT OF THE BOX. Buying something and finding these problems makes me totally suspect about what might be lurking that we have no idea about.
We sincerely hope that those of you who have the new engines totally enjoy them. For us, the problems and lousy QC/product are something that we don’t want. That is why we have five engines on order from Scott Mann. We trust him.
We trust Lionel too. But it is a trust that they will do it wrong.

This was one of my last preorders and they did disappoint with the colors unfortunately. Speaking with folks at Lionel, they assured me they will take care of them. I do have faith that they will or I would have never opened it. The loose boiler front and shell are an inconvenience and could entirely be related to shipping and I'll look into that in greater detail later but right now it doesn't affect its operation. They should work harder on the front end of production rather than dealing with it at the end. My PE cars with the exception of a few bearing caps were fine. After I get a few more items I suspect I'll be done pre ordering anything. I'd rather this thread not turn into another gripe session on Lionel. I acknowledged the issues I found, the color issue is well documented.

... I love the crew talk on this as it is different but since from what I understand they had the engineer from the 611 in for these, why in heck did you NOT do road number specific call outs? ... Marty, I have two major beefs with Lionel's "standard" (i.e., non-road-number specific) Crewtalk/Towercom these days. First, the dialogs should ALL be road-number specific. Nothing is more annoying than to have the exact same dialogs in the exact same voice(s) coming from 3 or 4 different locomotives. Let's call it what it is. Lionel cut corners and got lazy, because back in the TMCC days and even early Legacy days, each locomotive had road-name/number specific dialogs. That set the standard, and it was cool. So now we're paying more and getting less. Enough said. Secondly, the voices need to SOUND like real people who do the job. Your new J is a good example of this. However, most offerings from the recent crop of locomotives have the same, lame-sounding engineer who sounds like he never spent a day operating a locomotive in his lifetime... or worse yet, he doesn't even sound like he's LISTENED to a real engineer talk. It's as if Lionel found some local yokel who never saw a real train in his life and asked him to read a bunch of dialog scripts COLD. It's so bad, I don't even wanna use the feature. Glad to hear you're happy with the new "J", stripe color and loose boiler issues notwithstanding. The whistle sounds and whistle-steam features are outstanding on the new "J".

Can't say I disagree with you. The 606 has that road number call out. It sounds great to hear it. My point is on this engine though is you had the 611 engineer record the dialog. Why didn't you have him use the road specific call outs. David, your second point I found is a hit and miss feature. I have a few that sound pretty good and then as you said some that sound like folks who have no clue. I'm sure as you said both are to save money. MTH uses a lot over and over too but one thing I love about the MTH diesels is the random radio chatter. Sounds awesome. I hope to do another shoot once the shell is replaced. Hopefully once that is done I will have an awesome model. I'm still pretty excited about despite the stripe color.

two words China Syndrome sorry to hear the J has issues and martye I would be very suspicious of loose boiler and screws are tight!
so a question is lionel cheapening product line by removing key features like the front marker lights or was the tmcc one incorrect? not being a Norfolk western person not sure what is correct. I hope all will be corrected for all so the engines issues are dealt with to your satisfaction.
