In 2015 M.T.H. released an uncatalogued (11-1036-1) Lionel Corporation Tinplate Standard Gauge 400E steam locomotive exclusively for MTHRRC members. The limited production run of 60 were offered exclusively to MTHRRC members and was is decorated to match the Lionel Corporation Tinplate MTHRRC cars that had been released (1 each year) from 2009 to 2014. it has the Old Tinplate look but incorporates modern LED lighting, synchronized puffing smoke and Proto-Sound 3.0. This beautiful train resides each December beneath my Christmas Tree before being carefully wrapped and stored for the next 11 months. Do you have a “Temporary Tinplate” layout?

That is a stunning set, Emile. Thank you. That video was made in 2015 which was before the matching Caboose was produced. I hope to do an updated version this Christmas with the complete set.

Yes, I do have a 6’ x 7.5’ temporary tinplate layout with an oval of USA Track with 57” diameter curves. I put it up so I had a place to run, test run, and display my Standard Gauge trains and accessories that I bought to run with the SGMA club. (A floor layout with me on my knees got old fast) I couldn’t just let them sit on the shelves or in boxes between shows. I also didn’t want to give up the room space for when I have people over to watch the permanent layout of O Gauge trains, or for special projects. The layout goes up and comes down in 15 minutes.
The layout is just track and accessories, laid on a bedsheet, over 3 6’x30” “Lifetime” folding plastic tables I bought at Home Depot.
Here it is:

A bedsheet is a neat idea for my folding table. I have a 3 by 5 table that I tacked indoor outdoor carpet atop that I was thinking of repurposing.

Back in the days before I had a permanent layout, EVERY setup I had was temporary. I was mostly in to tinplate then, didn't really get into modern stuff until I started running command control.
When I visited my paternal grandparents for the summer as a teenager, I would bring an enormous box full of trains and track so I could set them up. Lots of good memories of many long vacations there.
I used to take over the spare room in the house to build a Christmas layout every yeat. This was Christmas 2015, the very last year before my first layout was constructed.
In 2020 I decided to construct a temporary Marx layout around my little Christmas tree to try and brighten up that gloomy holiday. It did keep me amused!

Those are great memories. Nice photos too.

While not a very good photograph, here is my Grand Dad's 1929 Christmas "temporary" layout with him in the back. (click image to enlarge)

Thanks. My whole family has had trains for several generations.
Now it is our turn to educate and let the following generations take custody and enjoy these wonderful toys and models that were the source of delight to their ancestors.
Truly amazing that some things that were meant to be "disposable" and "amusements" have survived for well over 100 years and they work as well today as they did when they were first produced.
And for those who can remember who touched and played with them long before they were born!
