Did we lose Seayak bill. The last time he posted was Jul 17, 2024. But he is posting on MTF I hope he comes back. Since July 17th, though, I believe we have had more than a dozen join, so something has to be going well here to have that steady growth.

A point to be made is that a contributing member has chosen to not participate here any longer. Of the “dozen” new members, 98% do not contribute, which is fine, but the profit/loss column isn’t the best way to judge a forum’s qualities.

The overwhelming majority of new members never contribute even 1 post. We’ve lost an active member and a good guy. Hopefully Bill will return in the near future.

In other words, how do you encourage these new members to participate more? The interest is there since they did join.

Quality over quantity posts will distinguish a contributing member every time. But on that criteria perhaps I should chase myself away! Aargh.

People tend to float around the three O scale forums, looking for that perfect fit. It takes time. Some of us patronize all three and some just stick with a single venue.
They all have good points and bad points, but they just have to be worked with and around. Some people may not want to devote time and effort when things get a little out of sorts, and they move to a location where there is less back and forth discussion and feel comfortable there.
We just need to let people follow their own paths. It’s okay.

Perhaps it all depends upon what motivated them to join. Some may want the resource but are intimidated to post. Others may just be curious. Obviously for better or worse I am not much of a voyeur.

We have a welcome aboard thread for every new member to make them feel at home. Very few new members respond to their welcome thread or post at all.
I don’t know why so many join but never participate. Some may just like to read posts and view pictures but not be more involved than that.

At the bottom of the page it shows the members that are logged on and the number of guest.
Just a few members and a lot of guest. This forum provides a lot of entertainment for those that get a bag of popcorn and just watch the show that's provided. LOL
Plus you have to be a member in order to see the pictures that are posted as thumbnails
And I have noticed that many of the really good content providers have left the forum.
And sometimes the first page gets filled up with welcome aboard and advertisement videos

A point to be made is that a contributing member has chosen to not participate here any longer. ... Unless you know otherwise, I wouldn't necessarily jump to any conclusions. Much of this is human nature, as peeps float in and out of different social media circles. Different things trigger different behaviors with people. Memebers can get tired of the senseless banter that can occur among people with different personalities. Sometimes we tolerate it. Other times we get tired of it and disappear for awhile. At the end of the day, we can only control the controllable. And other people's behaviors and reactions aren't anything we can control... nor should we want to.
Bill started a great thread about Lionel's Great American Railroad GG-1 train set tallying up a $4,800 MSRP. And as an OP on many topics here, I can tell you we can never predict which direction(s) a thread might take. In some cases, we can't even IMAGINE how a thread can evolve beyond anything we ever intended. Whether seeing his thread get locked disappointed him, after what turned out to be 6 pages of mindless babble over the definition of a "train set" is something only Bill knows. But if it, I completely understand... and I'm sure we'll see him return in due course. Whether we want to admit or not, we often get tired of "other people" at times... and it's human nature to take a break from differing viewpoints that occasionally become confrontational. It just gets old.

... And I have noticed that many of the really good content providers have left the forum. ... Generally speaking, content creation on forums has become a moving target in recent years. 5-10 years ago... and even further back than that... people NEEDED forums to exchange information and showcase their content. Nowadays, the online world is quite different. In this era of YouTube and video production, the younger generation can build content regularly on their own YouTube channel and garner tens of thousands of followers if they combine content with some personal flair. Even long-standing social media platforms like OGR can't compete with those numbers. OGR needs these YouTubers a LOT more than the YouTubers need OGR (among other forums).
Which leads us to ask, "What IS good content for online forums these days?". I for one offer up a few topics when I can, but I don't feel the pressure to post everyday. Sometimes I disappear for awhile and then reappear, when I feel I have something worthwhile to say. I have a few projects planned for my layout... so perhaps I'll share the progress of those projects that I think might interest others. I don't see myself starting up a YouTube channel, but I've also lived by the old adage, "Never say never". So until I venture into those waters, I'll post here when the notion moves me.

Good post and to the point. Sometimes new and interesting posts pop up I enjoy and add to. Like the "wordless Picture Thread". I have a ton of pictures I took when younger of trains, etc. decades ago in areas of my youth I been adding. Otherwise they just been sitting in a folder with only me and memories to enjoy. As to myself, I enjoy watching and reading progress of projects modelers accomplish here. It stirs my interest and sometimes add to my layout or rolling stock.
