Way over my limited budget. I do think further down the road one would be hard pressed to find this set on the secondary market.
Even though my accountant (me) says I shouldn't have, I did order the custom run by Brady's of the Blue Comet 64' woodsided passenger cars. There are very few gotta have items and this one fits the bill. I also think that this set will be very hard to find later on. I'd be curious to know the production numbers (I'm guessing 25?).
It seems to me these days with BTO that if you don't order an item when announced you'll have trouble finding it down the road.

Aimed at an ever-shrinking demographic I guess but maybe the hordes of “influencers” will be the new high-end collectors, who knows. With such a saturated secondary market, it’s hard for my steam-powered brain to understand. Dave To your point about the future high end collectors, the world of influencers seems more geared to churning/flipping than retaining product.

I’m pretty sure Lionel’s minimum commitment for locomotives is 40 units. And even higher for rolling stock — perhaps as much as 100 per SKU.
So John is going out on a limb with this one. But he’s also charging a good dollar for the custom-runs he’s selling. His Big Boy sold out shortly after it became available. This one might take a bit longer to sell through, however — especially the cars-only sales.

I wonder if he's getting a special deal because he is also offering the cars w/loco? I hope he does well as I've always had great dealings with Brady's. I know the 64' Woodsided cars are Lionel's now, but I always wished that MTH would have listed the production numbers on their products. Just for curiosity's sake I suppose.

Guys just heard from my hobby shop, the price list is not even out from his distributor... it appears there are some errors, so he is waiting for confirmation before prices are sent out. I am hoping that some of these passenger / baggage / caboose prices are wrong.

I am hoping that some of these passenger / baggage / caboose prices are wrong. Those B60 baggage car prices are outright hideous. The 3-pack of American Railroads baggage cars is listed as $900. And other roadnames are listed as $300 for the standard version and $400 for the Vision model w/loading-unloading dialogs. Definitely nosebleed territory.
Additionally, I also noticed some inconsistencies with the 18" aluminum car 2-packs. Some were listed as $600... others as $500. The 18" aluminum 4-packs are listed as $1,300... so that's $325 each. So I'm surmising the correct 2-pack price will be $600.

Yeah, as soon as I heard the news I wanted to tell everyone don't loose their hat! Nothing is correlating in price in the catalog.

But I thought folks interested in Brady's Blue Comet passenger cars were always encouraged to call the store. I just don't remember if I read that on their website or on a flyer they handed out at York.

It used to be on the front page and now with a search it doesn't even appear. Maybe he sold out of his allotment of the stand-alone passenger cars? On another note: I did pay upfront for the cars. I know some don't like to but I prefer it. It seems that when I order stuff it all comes in at the same time. If it's already been paid for it's less painful for me.

The $4,800 set may seem illogical to you and maybe you won’t buy it, but somebody is buying them because they sell out and I don’t see any in the blowout bin. Lionel would not be making these sets if they were losing money on them. Even though I am not in the market for one of these beasts, I think the idea of them is really cool and I applaud Lionel for having the audacity to produce them. How does a BTO item "sell out"? Lionel will make as many as are ordered, plus spares for parts and the inevitable DOAs that come off the container.

... How does a BTO item "sell out"? Lionel will make as many as are ordered, plus spares for parts and the inevitable DOAs that come off the container. "SOLD OUT" is always a relative term. The reference in this thread was regarding John Brady's custom-run Big Boy selling out shortly after it was delivered. Lionel has minimum production quantities -- currently 40 units for locomotives. I think Brady ordered 85. Most of those were based on pre-order commitments, but a few were ordered "on spec".
Mr. Muffin's Trains runs a ton of custom-runs... and quite often, he'll move forward with a given offering if he can get 20 firm customer orders. The remaining 20 are ordered "on spec" with hopes he'll sell them all eventually. Hence the term "sold out" at the dealer level makes sense applied to custom-runs. OTOH, "sold out" is somewhat a foregone conclusion to Lionel for BTO items, since they produce what dealers order.

I am restoring my father-in-law's train set because it's nearly 80 years old and it was played with by he and his brother when they were kids. A New Tin Plate set doesn't really interest me.

Okay, so it technically isn't a set. But, as someone else has stated, who would buy that motor and not get the matching cars for it. The 1:1 never pulled anything but those cars! In for a penny, in for a pound.

The $4,800 train set in this catalog does not exist. The only reason its not advertised as a set is because the box would be too big and too heavy. Stop kissing the ring!!!! Dave
