I need alot more than a almost $5,000 dollar train set. As nice as it may be I can think of a ton of things I would buy with that amount of cash.
Guess ill go see what Menards is selling!!

I really don’t understand the complaining about train prices. From a practical point of view, ALL trains are a “waste” of money. If you like it, buy it. If it’s a lot of money, save up over the next year until it is released or put it on lay a way.
No point in whining about it. You have options to buy it if you want to.

Most of us in this hobby can buy such a trainset of we wanted to. If you are in this hobby, it is fair to assume that you have the extra cash to spend on it. But that also means that we get to choose how we spend that money. $4,800 exceeds my annual train budget. I like being creative, purchasing items that needs some TLC, and finding bargains. To me that is the fun part. I wasn't whining about the price, I was just stating a point that for me, this is too to spend on a trainset. To each their own.

Not at all surprised to see this. For the past few catalogs, Lionel has been offering "super sets". And if you believe Lionel, they're telling us that "their customers" are asking for bigger and bigger super sets. LOL!!!
Honestly, I don't believe that for a second... because that's paramount to the fox guarding the hen-house. But that doesn't mean Lionel won't stop trying to package these sets as super luxury items that its Vision Line customers would be proud to own.
Between the marketing of these super sets and the marketing of big-ticket items with multiple road-names, Lionel is attempting to create a market where customers who CAN afford these luxuries will be comfortable knowing there's a market for them, when somebody is ready to sell their $4,800 passenger set (or whatever else reaches that stratospheric level). So they feel good about owning one NOW.
And let's not forget that Lionel is also counting on a number of prospects to thin out their roster as a means to finance these new purchases. For example, if you sell $20,000 in trains... it's certainly a helluva lot easier to plunk down $4,800 for a super passenger set pulled by a Vision Line locomotive than if you needed to hit your bank account for a net new expenditure of $4,800. How many peeps are doing this is anyone's guess. But Lionel seems to be smiling all the way to the bank with these insane prices. There's certainly no stopping them as far as I can see. And the dealers and clubs are not far behind Lionel in this department, as there's no shortage of custom-runs in the stratosphere either.

The $4,800 set may seem illogical to you and maybe you won’t buy it, but somebody is buying them because they sell out and I don’t see any in the blowout bin.
Lionel would not be making these sets if they were losing money on them. Even though I am not in the market for one of these beasts, I think the idea of them is really cool and I applaud Lionel for having the audacity to produce them.

Does the old expression of a fool and his /her money are soon parted apply? But then again if you've got it flaunt it.

I myself refuse to spend anywhere near that amount on any train set. I have no problem for other people to spend as much as they like. When prices started going up about ten years ago I stopped buying any new Lionel. Imo the build quality is down and the lack of any new tooling and the same old engines being repainted over and over has turned off a lot of train guys and gals.
Now if you like paying the outrageous prices of today's trains then by all means do it. Its your money but if you think I should join those doing it then your sadly mistaken. I have been buying and selling trains since 1970 and I have more trains then I will ever use even though I have sold off most of it. If I want to buy something new there is items out there that are reasonable, not from Lionel. In 1970 all I ever wanted were Lionel trains but unfortunately they are not the same company they once were. Once the owners think they have absolute high of their worth Lionel will be sold.
Btw, in today's world most people couldn't even save enough in a year to buy that albatross of a train set!!!

(sigh) At the end of the day ... they are STILL JUST TOYS.
And we need to have priorities in this day and age.
Also, the quality from Lionel has been pretty abysmal as of late, so that price is NOT even close to being realistic even for a museum-quality scale model.

My comment was consistent with the title of this thread which is about the price of a specific set or an engine and all the available cars to go with it. Further my first comment was in the form of a question not an affirmative statement. The second comment indicates that if you have the money go for it.

So we are a forum of fools because we waste money on trains? My comment was consistent with the title of this thread which is the price of a specific set. So a $4,800 train set is "foolish" regardless of what it contains or what features it has but a $1,400 train set is the pinnacle of wisdom. From a logical and practical perspective, all trains are a foolish purchase. They don't give us shelter, they don't put food on the table, they don't provide the necessities of living. But we buy trains because they give us immense pleasure and satisfaction on many levels. If my neighbor loves his $4,880 train set, who are we to judge? If the high end sets don't work for you, then don't buy them. But I think it is better to applaud and be happy for our fellow train guys who love their giant expensive layouts and trains. I say good for them!

There is a difference between toy trains and model trains. Toy trains can't do what Legacy and DCS do nor would I let a five year old play with them. The amount of work I put into building my layout I would not have done for a toy.
I don't like the price either, but the simple solution is don't buy it. I stopped buying new Lionel a long time ago.

Does the old expression of a fool and his /her money are soon parted apply? But then again if you've got it flaunt it. So we are a forum of fools because we waste money on trains? Many people would think spending hundreds (forget about thousands) of dollars on trains is indeed foolish. Many are struggling to pay their bills and don’t have money for expensive hobbies.
I think people who can afford to pay thousands of dollars on their hobbies aren’t foolish. It doesn’t matter if they are spending on cars, boats, airplanes, vacations, trains, or any other luxury. If they can afford it and think it’s a worthwhile expenditure then I say good for them.
However, if they’re going into debt to pay for their hobbies I think they are foolish.

There is no $4,800 train set in this catalog. Now, you can put together through separate purchases a nice train set on your own with add on and what not, but that is NOT the same thing as saying there is a $4,800 train set in this catalog.
