Mary is in the kitchen baking Russian tea cakes and listening to Christmas music. We have the outside decorated, but we haven't gotten to the inside yet.

Wonderful! We’ve got our outdoor lights up and the inside is about 50% done.
I love the journey of the season. Decorating is part of the fun so no rush.

Denny, Very nice start to the Christmas season. We are somewhat behind because of the moving process. None the less, I am hoping to have the tree up next weekend. Since I don't know the exterior of the new house well enough and don't want to rush putting up fixtures, I won't be putting up exterior lights. We will have a wreath on the door, and put single white illuminated lights in the front windows. Alfred

I hope to get the tree and some decorations up this week.

Okay, a little bit of progress this AM: I need a bit of that corrugated brick skirting...

Well, I started out great guns this year, getting the small upstairs tree and the garland and lights for the balcony rail and stair banister deployed in time for a delayed Thanksgiving family get-together, though I discovered the smart plugs I had been using were not playing well with Alexa, causing me to have to revert to an old-fashioned 24 hour timer instead of voice control and automatic routines. Then, after the get-together when I brought out and assembled the downstairs pre-lit tree, I discovered that it was *strobe* flashing instead of just lighting up! Arghhh . . . A bit of sleuthing revealed the culprit was the power supply, a 13 watt 29 volt wall wart feeding the LEDs, and on-line sources both suggested that this was a known failure mode for this particular PS, *and* indicated OEM replacements were available on Prime! So, the main tree will have to remain unlit until next week, and that has delayed my plan to install a simple O-gauge loop around the tree's base until after the tree is repaired. *sigh* Stay tuned . . .

I need a bit of that corrugated brick skirting... Okay, found some of the corrugated brick skirting stuff on eBay, but it won't be here until next week (or so the vendor says). It will not delay construction...

Lights are on...three old strings of multi-color LEDs: My favorite strings, a combination of red, pearl-white, and clear white incandescent, had too many bulbs out to fool with anymore. It killed me, but into the bin they went. Sorry Denny; seems we've temporarily hijacked your thread.

Added the final piece of the outdoor lights. I needed a Bethlehem Star hanging from a tree limb. I couldn't find one at a decent price so I made one. I will get some photos tomorrow evening.

It killed me, but into the bin they went. Hey, if they haven't already gone out, why not retrieve the strings from the trash and cut out and salvage the individual still-working LEDs? Depending on the strings, you may have to fiddle a bit with voltage (always start low!) and/or current-limiting resistors, but most can be fed AC or DC from about 2-3 volts up to typical accessory voltages, and can be used to perform many lighting functions on the layout.

Old regular mini-lights, not LEDs. I’ve been fiddling with these things for the last three or four Christmas seasons...just not worth it. Besides, you can buy a new strand of 100 for less than seven or eight bucks.
