I have been using a cab1 since 1995. I used a cab 2 from the start till about for about 6 or 7 years but I always went back to cab1. Even though I have quite a few of legacy engines I find the cab1 to be more than capable of running both tmcc and legacy.
The cab one is easier to use and its more robust. I still have One that works that is 28 years old, just change the batteries.
Yes you may miss a few things the cab2 can do but to me the cab one does everything I need. I run TMCC, Legacy and even conventional if needed.
I also consider the base 3 to be overkill and over priced. For those that have cab 2, KEEP THEM!! FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR ONE, STOP!!! use a cab1 or Cab1L. Don't pay the exorbitant prices being asked.

I started with Cab1L and eventually bought a Cab2. I have been using Cab2 for many years. I have zero interest in Cab3. I've decided if my Cab2 ever stops work then that will be the end of my Legacy days. I'll focus on Lionchief Plus or LC+ 2.0.

Remember you can use cab1, cab1L, Lionchief app to run any tmcc or Legacy engine and most Lionchief. Now a days Lionchief is tmcc.

The Cab-2, despite it’s ungainly looks, is the best way to control trains. The sliders for whistle and train brake are a must IMHO. Also, it’s the best way to operate lashups.

I had a cab1 and it bit the dust, ( I bought it used so who knows why. ) I bought cab2 didn't like it, had a hard time programing it. ( yes I'm not very tech savvy, I have problems trying to do apps like McDonalds ) I bought a cab 1L, Love it. Very happy with it, no desire for cab3. In fact if it dies I will probably just go back to conventional as I don't have that many TMCC/Legacy engine anyway.

So sorry to hear everyone likes the CAB2 Remote. Yes I have one. Yes the sliders are the BEST PART! With that being said let me tell you what I prefer and really love. I love it so much I have 6. Two are still in the boxes but the other four I let guest use or they can use their phones. What do I Have. I have the BEST in MY OPINION! MTH DCS REMOTE. Easy for anyone to use. Comfortable and not bulky. Can use without looking at (I like to watch my trains).
Now before you ban me, I DO HAVE the CAB2 but rarely use it do to the the fact that the MTH App will run everything (99% of Lionel). Even the remote will run tmmc Lionel and Legacy in tmcc mode, with no problems. Forgive me for my ways you LIONEL Fans but like I said I want to see my trains not the remote.

I also started out with the CAB1 in 1995 or thereabouts and we also used the setup doing demos for Lionel at train shows. When the CAB2 came out Lionel sent many in our demo group a setup but when new management came on board at Lionel they decided to market the CAB2 at train shows themselves. When the CAB1L came out I purchased a set along with an extra remote.
The CAB1L complete setup is going for a lot of money if you can even find on for sale. I’m satisfied with both my CAB2 and CAB1L and don’t really see the need to purchase a CAB3.

Besides my MTH DCS control, I have CAB 1 and 2. Believe it or not when running more then 1 engine and needing 2 controllers, it seems because of its simplicity, I end up picking up the CAB1. If only 2 engines, Lionel and or MTH, I just use the MTH system controller to control both and just switch back and forth between engines. They do everything I need to have done to operate. If I'm running only 1 train and its a Lionel Legacy I'll pick up the CAB 2. But in reality, I seldom use the CAB 2.
But I have controller backup hand sets, 2 CAB 1s, 2 CAB 2s and 3 MTHs. I just can't see spending a huge amount of cash to upgrade to controllers when in reality what I get out of what I have does everything I need for them to do.
I see were the mths are selling for 500 to 600.00. I paid 175.00 for mine at a local train show 4 years ago. All the CAB 1s were free and the CAB 2 I believe I paid 200.00.

I have standardized on MTH and have their DCS setup using an App on an iPad and love it. I do have some Lionel (Polar Express, B&M RS3 and some pre/post-War) but have purged most of them.
Too many systems = too many potential problems as far as I am concerned.
