Happy Halloween everyone!
I’m curious how the holiday plays out where you live. Do trick-or-treaters come to your door or does your town have a different tradition?
Our town is country so most of the homes are just far too far apart for kids to come. So we all donate some candy and that gets distributed to the homes around the common (center of town), which, as we say in New England, is more thickly settled. Then all the kids and parents converge on the common. It is a wonderful site with so many people and kids in costume. The General Store give out free chili and adult beverages. The Lions do a hot dog and popcorn stand. It’s a blast!
How about your town?

We used to get quite a few trick-or-treaters here in the 'hood, but as the median age has steadily increased, not so many anymore. I expect maybe a dozen or so, not much more. We have a parade downtown a few days before, where the kids get loaded up with candy. It's all gotten rather sedate, anymore. I miss the days when I had to go out the next morning and find my patio furniture, pull the toilet-paper down out of the trees, and replace the mailbox. Uh, no...don't miss that

They all go downtown to trick or treat and we get stuck with a lot candy and yet my wife keeps buying candy. Personally I'd rather not answer the door and leave the candy at the store.

Happy Halloween. We get a lot of trick or treaters locally. It has always been very popular and the kids love it. Our neighbors have an annual Halloween party for the adults every year that is a lot of fun. This year I was Elmer Fudd and the wife was Bugs Bunny.

BAH!! HUMBUG!!
Happy Halloween to all that enjoy it! I’m not a fan. Even as a kid I despised having to dress in a costume and all the neighbors knew it was me anyway! I loathed having to knock on doors to beg for candy, especially the grouchy old neighbors who just sneered at you. I only did it because I was out with neighborhood friends and we had an ‘after party’ at a friend’s house whose mom would make hot snacks with koolaid.
But when I became an adult (figuratively) it was fun seeing parents bringing their kids in cute costumes and seeing their joy when they got their treats. However, it didn’t last long. After the crowds lessened, late in the evening older teenagers were knocking and their only costume was a hoodie sweatshirt. It was obvious they were just looking to get candy. Then we noticed they were arriving to the neighborhood in a large van from who knows where. Not positive it wasn’t for nefarious purposes. It just wasn’t in the spirit of the event. That was the end for us. Although in subsequent years we gave out candy to the kids, the lights went out by 8pm. After a few years hardly anyone strolled the neighborhood on Halloween.
Now here in Southern California kids don’t go door to door, at least in our development. They hold a “Trunk and Treat” event on a Saturday afternoon at the golf course parking lot. Neighbors provide the treats out of the trunks of their car and the kids arrive in their costumes and walk car to car. We don’t do that either. I don’t want to contribute to children’s excessive sugar intake. It’s best for humanity!

Sometimes we get quite a number of kids and we run out of candy and other times none show up. We’ve been giving out the full sized candy bars and sometimes the kids can’t believe the size of them. We get two variety packs of 30 bars at BJ’s. This gives us a nice selection. They usually start coming around at about 4:00 PM and usually end about 7:00 or when we run out of candy. I used to just leave the bowl on our front porch but sometimes the kids take handfuls instead of just one or two bars so we don’t do that anymore. I’m careful about candy with nuts like Hershey Bars and ask if they are OK.
in past years if we had any candy left over we would take them with us when we would go to the theater but lately we just leave them at church.

Growing up we went out and ALL of us dressed up (mother and dad also). We only went to people we knew and the whole thing was to have a costume that they would NOT know you. When I first got married I moved into the town 8 miles away. As said above they showed up not even in costume and demanded candy. Now we live 10 miles out of the closest town. First couple years only nieces and nephews showed up. Once they were older it is NOBODY which is find with us.

When I was a kid you actually had to do a trick or something in order to get a treat rather than just stick out your hand and demand candy. I have fond memories of bobbing for apples, engaging adults in conversation and getting in return home made Rice Krispie bars, candied or Carmel apples, pop corn and other unique tasty treats made for us kids.
Then came the razor blade scares and other tampering reports, which pretty quickly put an end to what had been a pretty interesting and unique experience.
It was just about that time that I aged out of trick or treating which back then was quite young compared to some much older tweeners in costume these days.
All in all I now favor the community party approach with costume parades, adequate lighting, protective adult presence and most importantly protection of the kids from crazy drivers and crazed recluses bent on evil.

We set up a temporary Halloween layout in the front window for trick-or-treaters to see. Here are photos from this years window display.

Back in the 50's when myself and my younger brother were young we went trick and treating and it was great. We lived in a major city so there were plenty of places handing out candy. When I owned a house with my girlfriend at the time we gave out candy to all the little ones who came by. When teenagers came around who were not in costume I would just tell them no costume, no candy. After a few years of that going on we just stopped handing out candy. Now living in a over 65 hi rise I don't have to worry about it.

Dave Dave, didn't you tell me at York that as a kid for Halloween you would go cave to cave to gather treats and fruit from the neighboring tribes? And one year you got bit by a pet Raptor?
