I love Menards and what they bring to the O-Gauge table. I have purchased numerous trains and accessories from them and I will continue to do so. But I will pretend that their Rebate Program just doesn't exist. It's just too irritating.
Like any rebate program, you have to jump through a few hoops. This keeps too many people from actually redeeming the rebate. It's a cheap game, a sellers trick. You think you're getting a discount but most never submit the claim for the rebate.
First you need a Rebate Receipt, Then you need the Rebate Form. It asks for basic information that Menards already had. They already had my mailing address and billing address and email and phone number. It's just "Busy work". Then you mail both the Receipt and the Rebate Form to an address in Elk Mound, WI.
Six to Eight weeks later, you receive your official Rebate Program Check. At least it's called a "Check". You can't actually cash it. It can only be used to purchase more Menards products. It's really a "Store Credit". It says so right on the card you receive, but it's called "Merchandise Credit Check". It's also the first time you see the phrase "Merchandise Credit Check". Up until then, you think you're actually getting a Rebate.
I didn't like what seemed to me to be a deception but Menards has built up enough goodwill with me that I decided to look the other way. Besides, I was going to be purchasing from them anyway.
That's when I noticed the Fine Print: "Not valid for purchases on Menards.com."
I live in Maryland. The nearest Menards is 3 1/2 hours away in West Virginia. But Menards knows that. I'm never going to use my Rebate Credit Check. They know that too.
That's what's so irritating.
Worse than that is the fact that they didn't need to offer the Rebate in the first place. I didn't buy their trains because of the Rebate. The only thing accomplished by their Rebate Program is to leave a sour taste in my mouth.
I've enjoyed my Menards trains for 4 months but now I just feel like a Sucker.
