My only train ride was from Detroit to Fort Knox Kentucky in July 1966 when I got drafted. Middle of July and hot as hell and NO air conditioning. We were all hanging out the windows trying to stay cool. Needless to say it prepared me for my trip to Vietnam for the Southeast Asia War Games.

Many times in my life. NY to Momence, Ill. in early 50s steam engines. Trips to California on the SF. During 60s many times while in the service home and back to base and San Diego for my Senior vacation to SE Asia. Leaving at 7AM here for St Marys, GA to be a part in the Wild West Train Ride show (my last non paying acting job). either a steam engine or a GP will head the train, not sure yet.

Many times, predominantly along the Northeast Corridor. Back when I was working for Pfizer, I used to take the Metroliners once or twice each month from New Carrolton or Baltimore to New York for meetings at the company HQ up on 42nd Street, and there were a few trips to Boston for other work-related forays. Also took the family to Orlando on Amtrak's Silver Service a few months after 9-11 when the airways were still in turmoil...my children still talk about that trip, probably a life moment for them. Nothing recent though.

I grew up on Long Island and rode the LIRR to and from the City many times. After moving to Poughkeepsie in 2000 I sometimes rode the Metro North to and from the City.
I've been on 2 long distance rides. In 1967 a large chunk of my family took a train from NYC to Ozark, Alabama and back for my cousin's wedding. Her soon to be husband was stationed at Ft. Rucker.
In 1981 I took a round trip from NYC to Milwaukee, the Amtrak Lakeshore Limited, for work.
Just for fun I would like to take Brightline to Miami.

Mine are at opposite ends of the comfort and to some extent scenery spectrum. I used to ride the South Shore between northwest Indiana and Chicago regularly, including in the days when the original Interurbans were still in service and they made a terrible racket inside. Then I once took a train in Peru to get to and from Machu Picchu, which was a real adventure.

I've been on a few, but sadly my TODO list is far longer than my COMPLETED list. - Roaring Camp - chaperoned a school trip, very fun!
- Hong Kong Peak Tram - Basically a modern cog train up the side of a big hill, the top of Hong Kong. I was there for work and had a day to kill.
- BART, SF Bay Area Rapid Transit - Rode this into work for about 18 months.
- Amtrack Acela from Massachusetts to NYC.
- SF Cable Cars - OK, so not a train but close!
- Scotland - I was out in Scotland training a partner for a week and the hotel was an hour train ride to their office. The train stop was their office, which was convenient. I don't recall the exact route, but I do recall it being a very peaceful and a beautiful ride through the country.
I'm sure there are others I am forgetting.

VietnamVet1967, It was unfortunate that your train trip had to involve deployment. Thank you for serving our country. Alfred

I have enjoyed trains as a hobby and as an observer. I grew up in NYC enjoying the Subway; especially riding the elevated sections. (3rd Ave el,the BMT line out to Coney Island. From the roof of our apartment, I used a 8 mm movie camera to photograph the trains. ) I made it a habit of riding the SIRR, LIRR and NJ Transit, and Amtrak trips along the NE corridor. In the 60s I did quite a bit of rail travel – riding some of the ‘bid name’ trains before mergers and Amtrak. Most notably was the Silver Meteor, Empire Builder and North Coast Hiawatha, and the Broadway Limited before Penn Central. (I did get to travel on some CN lines.) Alfred (I have quite a collection of 35 mm slide. I would share some here; however, I am now blind and will have to wait for my son to go through the trays and sort them out. For years, I have been thinking of getting my slides converted to digital form; however, money and time are limitations. (I use screen access software to interact with the computer, so it is no trouble to make posts, etc,)

Back in April of 1975 thru October 1975 I was stationed at New London/Groton CT. and almost every weekend I would travel from there to Philadelphia and then to Paoli where my parents would pick me up and take me home to Westchester, that would be Friday afternoon and Sunday was the reverse.
I've done Strasburg about 4 or 5 times and did Winnsboro, S.C. once

Oh boy....as a kid, we lived in Naperville I'll, and my poor mom gave in sometimes to my nagging to ride the train to Aurora (pre Wayne's World). Dad would take us boys into Chicago via train, then we'd ride the El to old, very cold, Soldiers Field to watch "da bears" football games. I was always fascinated with the double deck passenger cars! And as I got older, I'd wait for the train to slow down near the Naperville station to drop off dozens of Chicago Tribunes..I was a newspaper boy for a few years.

When I was in 5th grade (60s) my grade school leased two train cars (one for the girls and one for the boys) from Chicago to Denver on spring break. I also rode a train with my mother when I was 10 (also 60s) from New Orleans to Chicago. We were in a sleeper car and watched the world go by.
