…..I also rode a train with my mother when I was 10 (also 60s) from New Orleans to Chicago. We were in a sleeper car and watched the world go by. Where did it go??

My only train ride was from Detroit to Fort Knox Kentucky in July 1966 when I got drafted. Middle of July and hot as hell and NO air conditioning. We were all hanging out the windows trying to stay cool. Needless to say it prepared me for my trip to Vietnam for the Southeast Asia War Games. I also got drafted in '66 Nov. Instead of a train I was on a bus to then Ft. Dix N.J. You say it was "hot" in South East Asia? Rained some to! LOL. WAR GAMES is right! Wife and I did ride the trains at Strasburg and also Jim Thorpe. (sp). They only had the diesels running then. Want to go back when they have the steamers running. Good time.

I grew up traveling by passenger train in the UK and just remember steam. The last time I went by train was over there in 2013. I’ve never been on VIA (the Canadian equivalent of Amtrak) as the nearest station is a few hours drive away from my home and the ticket prices away from the urban commuter corridors are horrendous. VIA only travels on Canadian National lines, not the CPR line near me anyway. My little steam-powered country branch line dieselized in 1962 and was closed in 1965. A bus service replaced it, and I’ve disliked bus travel ever since. I miss train travel - it’s the most civilized way to go. Dave

When I was 15, one summer I worked at a Place called "Woodland Museum". They had a old steam engine and train on a short track that went from one end of the Museum grounds to the other. Visitors could ride the train. The engineer let me run the controls one day. Was so much fun. A once in a life time experience.

We hardly ever fly but have been riding the rails on Amtrak for about 20 years. We have gone East to West and North to South on about ten different routes. If you count the segments its over 78 different train trips. Next year we will travel to the Grand Canyon North Rim and access it from the Winslow AZ station that is right at the LaPosada Hotel (former Harvey House). We prefer the relaxing less congested and easy going way to travel. At long refueling station stops you can sometimes walk into the city and shop. You can see parts of America that you will never see and take along food, liquor and personal items aboard without restriction. We book bedroom travel that has a private bathroom/shower and also take a small cooler along with us.
