Wow rtraincollector, you have been in the house for two plus Year's!! You should have all the bench work done, track laid and wired and scenery started. Its not brain surgery and as the commercial says, just do it!!! I built my 30'x15' layout and my brothers with my help built his 20'8' standard gauge layout across from mine at the same time. When we were basically done it was a great looking train room in my basement. Btw, we also had to remodel the basement to make it into a comfortable space. So you see it can be done if you really want it.

My layout has been languishing because of outside interference (taking care of aging parents) and procrastination trying to figure out what I want it to be. Will it be permanent or a temporary layout? As the parent situation evolves so does our future plans. That put an end to having a building constructed on our property for the trains.
I'm also dealing with difficulty downsizing from my previous layout. My equipment is all scale size and they were purchased with the previous large layout in mind. So with this layout being 7X smaller my passenger equipment can't stretch their legs like before. Right now I'm in a new design phase trying to shoehorn a 33" turntable and a 36" 10 stop transfer table in the space.
It's coming in some form and will be documented here. By the way, I never complimented you on your "mug" shot as your avatar.

Having been through this, it can be tough. Reality most set in with your goals. Do you really need both a roundhouse and a transfer table. Both take up an enormous amount of space. I was first and foremost very fortunate to have space to build a layout. I set down on paper what was REALLY IMPORTANT to me and then executed a plan to fit, Much smaller, yes, but in actuality, I get just as much enjoyment out of it.
The latest build I am working on is a sample of what you can done a very small space. We have trains in shelves all over the house, but the new one has a train in a fun and realistic setting. All who come to visit are blown away by it.
Remember, nothing happens until you set that first screw.

roadrunner440, good to have a post from you. I like what you are doing. I am in the post war Lionel camp with KW, V and 1034s; my equipment is all early Lionel post war and layout is O31 with some 72 radius - and I can run my O22 switches at 14V! Alfred

As I'm working with the track plan it's looking like I will not be able to include the transfer table for sure. It would run up against my access bridge and prevent entry to the open center of the layout no matter where I locate it. I believe I can work with a smaller footprint for the turntable or the transfer table and still have room to get around it but not both.
I had both the turntable and transfer table installed on my previous layout but never added power to them before we decided to move. So I'd really like to add one of them to my current build.

From past experience, there is w whole lot more fun with the turntable. I loved mine and it got a lot of use on two layouts.
Can't wait for you to start. You have an enormous amount of talent and an exceptional train inventory.

The North East is supposed to have heavy snow this coming winter, better keep that heater Adam!! Dave But the trains should be able to keep the house warm enough when they are running, right? Run that past your wife and see what she says. 😃🙄 Dave

I don't have as much time as I use too, but I have added track, 072 curves, and taken down structures. I've decided to do a train yard. Once I have the track how I want it, (still thinking about an elevated track), (decided against a transfer table due to space),I will finally start doing scenery. If I decide to do a town again it will be with Dept 56 buildings.

I thought there might have been an opportunity to re-do my layout before year’s end. That will have to wait. Depending on how matters progress, I may do insulation in the attic. In any case, I may lay some tracks on a 4’ x 4’ framed project board. Last month I removed the partially laid HO tracks from it. I am still debating whether to re-do an HO layout or go O gauge. If O gauge: I have enough O27 track to make a nice loop; however, no switches or I could do O31; I have 2 O22 switches, but no additional O31 tracks. I am going to have to think hard about which direction to go. Alfred
