Seems, since Christmas I been running nothing but 3 Passenger Trains. I know its the season, people coming and going home has increased traffic in the passenger service. But my 4 main industry that rely on Fuel oil, coal, lumber, also raw material and picking up boxcars, etc. and even though the employees are on Christmas Vacation. Not a single freight haul or designated freight engine has so much as had its boilers warmed up. All the storage tracks, sidings are filled to capacity with freight cars and idle freight engines. I'm sure the residents have noticed the lack of freight movements, and many of the industry workers live in the town and surrounding areas are seeing and hearing this and, probable worrying if their work place will there after the Holidays or close soon after. The problem maybe that the owner (me), has suddenly enjoyed watching the filled, lighted passenger cars go by, with station announcements, and especially more so when darkness falls, and lights are turned off. But I do worry if that the factories and industries are shut down because of the lack of freight service, they will turn into disarray and possible crime and slums will increase, people will move out. Had a Board meeting with my partner (wife), and she agrees something must be done and a decision made soon before vacation ends for the working people of the town.

No Walter, you DO NOT need consuling. Consider it as an evolution. Once the passenger train bug attacks you, there is no turning back. The bug hit me some 70 years ago, and I have not recovered from it since. But, look at the plus side. Beautiful passenger cars that light, talk and attrack more attention for visitors who come to your layout.
Just go with the flow, you will be much happier. Park the freights on the siding.

My friend, yours is no affliction, and you must not overthink the situation. GIVE IN and run passenger trains. Better yet, accumulate more than you can ever run, and if you feel guilty about your boxcars, put one at the head of a 12 x 21" passenger car consist and note how puny it looks. You'll never look back.

You'll be alright. Add a few freight cars to the rear of the train for the on line industries. BUT don't forget the caboose.

I am suffering from the same condition, Josef. I have been running 3 passenger trains and no freight trains for a while now. In my case I think it's because I recently acquired the Commodore Vanderbilt, the Green E-8 AA set and the Twentieth Century Limited Railking passenger cars and I've been running them instead of anything else. I do have freight cars on the industrial sidings so my O scale workers are keeping busy. Apparently the industries get new freight deliveries while I'm sleeping. As to your question, I suggest running passenger trains until the desire to run freight returns. That's what I'm doing and it seems to be working.

I've been disturbed since the 70s. Not much has changed, I'm just better at it.
I was running all passenger cars, now I'm running a Menards/Lionel tanker consist.

Something else I forgot to mention. Instead of looking at freight cars and types on auctions, I been putting in search, passenger cars O scale. OH WO IS ME! I'm not loaded on passenger cars, 10 SFs, 12 NYCs, and 8 Pennsy's. They sure look pretty and shiny those SFs and even the Pullman green Heavyweights and Pullmans are starting to enter my blood vessels.

LOL! This thread makes me smile!
I love all types of trains but can absolutely see the lure of well detailed passenger trains.

I see no issues with only running passenger cars. It's when you're not running trains period that we have a problem.

Walter, you need to release your fears. I’ll bestow upon you my vast knowledge of this kind of predicament.
It is widely known, and in some circles well documented, that model railroad people, customers and passengers are a patient lot. They never complain and will wait eternally for the next train movement. None of them even complain about some of the garish colors of their plastic clothing.
Ive actually had dozens of them imprisoned inside plastic bags sealed inside boxes for years without complaints. On the other hand they were no more appreciative upon their release, or dismal about being sealed in boxes again when we moved across country.
So you see, your worries are unfounded. Continue to abuse them as you wish. They will still be there when you’re ready to service their industry with a freight move someday!!
My assistant will send you my therapy bill to your address on file.
