I have posted about Menards here on the OGF, on Facebook and YouTube over the past month, recommending their line of Trains. I have received emails, DMs, PMs and Comments (including one on this Forum earlier this month) stating that Menards will not ship to California. Apparently when anyone orders online at Menards with a shipping address in California they get a message that shipping is not allowed due to California Prop 65. After a little research I found that California Prop 65 is a "Clean Water Act" that requires a warning to California Residents when products could contaminate their water. I also found an enforcement action by California from 2017 where they charged Menards with violating the Act by selling Hammers (Menards is primarily a hardware store) online to California residents. I don't understand any of this.
Can someone explain what is going on here? How are model train cars poisoning the water in California? I've been drinking lots of Maryland water since buying Menards trains and I feel fine.

You can look it up on YouTube. I do know, a lot of businesses won't ship to California because of their labeling requirement and possibility of being sued if not properly stated, etc. or later something found that may cause cancer which wasn't thought to be a cause before. Sometimes its the process employed in making a product, packaging, etc.

I talked with someone this week, a California resident, he said he ordered a few buildings from Menards and shipping was gonna be $200. Maybe it’s due to the same issues you mention.

What Walter said above is correct. California requires any product they perceive or otherwise that can cause cancer be labeled with a warning. Menards wasn’t doing this until recently.
After moving here I had lots of trouble having most of their train products shipped to my home the first three years. Then suddenly Menards started labeling the offending products with the cancer warning, sometimes on the box and sometimes just slipping a piece of paper with the box. Since then I’ve had no problems having their trains or buildings shipped here.

Craig, I don't know what that guy was talking about! I checked my recent order from Menards for the buildings I bought and shipping was $51 for two larger buildings and $17 for two smaller buildings. Maybe he was thinking of the total cost of everything. I wouldn't listen to anything that guy says!!

Jeez, I cannot understand Big Crab Cake why you can not see why a hammer can cause a problem with water.
Taking said hammer and beating water with said hammer could possibly cause the two hydrogen molecules to separate from the oxygen molecule there by making the water become no longer water!

Now that makes sense! It's just chemistry. California likes to follow the science.

Part of this has to do with lead being used in products made overseas. A lot of importers don’t bother to specify the allowable lead content, nor do they take responsibility on sampling and testing their products.
With China being, well… China, a lot of the products coming from there have lead in them among other carcinogens. Zinc rot anyone?
This is one example where I think California has a point. We often lament the loss of manufacturing here in the US and maybe if it were more expensive to import products (due to proper testing being conducted) we could compete with China better.

I don't know about the water but trains are like crack and very addictive. I bought one several years ago and have been a junky ever since. I think I need an intervention.....hehe
