I don't know about the water but trains are like crack and very addictive. I bought one several years ago and have been a junky ever since. I think I need an intervention.....hehe Ed, this forum is the intervention! We are hopelessly addicted.

Seems since I been here I've added, bought, and changed my layout and now in process of a complete makeover. Seems my addiction has increased since I been hanging out with you all.

I have posted about Menards here on the OGF, on Facebook and YouTube over the past month, recommending their line of Trains. I have received emails, DMs, PMs and Comments (including one on this Forum earlier this month) stating that Menards will not ship to California. Apparently when anyone orders online at Menards with a shipping address in California they get a message that shipping is not allowed due to California Prop 65. After a little research I found that California Prop 65 is a "Clean Water Act" that requires a warning to California Residents when products could contaminate their water. I also found an enforcement action by California from 2017 where they charged Menards with violating the Act by selling Hammers (Menards is primarily a hardware store) online to California residents. I don't understand any of this. Can someone explain what is going on here? How are model train cars poisoning the water in California? I've been drinking lots of Maryland water since buying Menards trains and I feel fine. To answer your original question, Proposition 65 (which has been around since 1986), is to warn a consumer when a product contains one or more chemicals that could possibly harm the environment. The list contains over 900 chemicals.
To comply, a company need only put a sticker or piece of paper with the product warning the consumer.
At first it sounds like Menards resisted, but then finally decided to go along with it.

I don't buy newly made trains and accessories. If I do, I will get a hazmat suit. Alfred

Here are some warnings that may not have made it onto the hobby steam locomotive/ diesel engine boxes: *Toe breakage hazard – sudden reflection of light from the windshield may startle the user causing the products to be dropped on the foot. *Impale hazard: The continuous and monotonous sound of loco chugging may cause drowsiness, causing the user to fall and impale themselves on the throttles of the transformer. *unconscious hazard – the oils and lubricants used on this product may get onto your fingers and hands, thus causing the product to drop on the floor and ricochet and hit your head. *Use of this product may cause friction against the tracks, overheat and cause spontaneous combustion . *Cut hazard -This product contains metal parts, which may cause cuts; do not use without a tetanus shot within the last 5 years. *Mood hazard – the bright livery colors may induce euphoria; the dull colors may cause depression. *Respiratory hazard – This product may contain fiber and metal dust particles – inhalation of these particles may cause long-term lung damage. *This product contains moving mechanical parts, which may cause injury to fingers. *Light hazard – Looking into the headlight of your locomotive may cause temporary blindness. *Sound hazard- Listening to the horn or whistle on your engine or loco may cause temporary hearing loss. *This product runs on electricity – potentially causing a shock hazard. Never inhale smoke emanating from your product. (See Respiratory Hazard info above.) *This product contains plastics of unknown type and may cause allergic reaction or release volatile organic chemicals which may cause one or more of the following: environmental damage (not excluding global warming), short or long term health risks, unexpected interaction with other materials. *Brain wave distortion hazard – The digital electronic components contained in your product or hand-held device may emit electromagnetic waves which may cause temporary blackout and interfere with the use of your mobile phone. (Also, pets, including fish, may be adversely effected.) *Protein / RNA/DNA hazard– This painted product may contain one or mor of the following Lead (PB), Mercury (Hg), Chromium (Cr), Cobalt (Co). Nickel (Ni), which may have interaction with proteins, causing their misconfiguration and inactivation causing metabolic disruption; furthermore these heavy metals may have adverse interactions with RNA and DNA, causing genetic repercussions. *The manufacturer makes no claim against the use of radioactive materials in the manufacture of its products. It is recommended that you limit your exposure to the product and store it in a lead enclosure.
Have I forgotten anything? This is offered to enhance your safety in the hobby. By the way, the next time someone tells me ‘Be Safe’, I am going to tell them “Don’t worry, I stopped brushing my teeth 3 months ago, to reduce the risk of poking my eye out with my toothbrush. Alfred

I'm sure that law makes sense in some situations but it seems ridiculous to apply it to toy trains. California has been protecting its citizens from poisonous toy trains since 1986 while the rest of us have had to brave the dangerous world of unprotected toy train fun. Maybe that's the reason the York attendance numbers have been steadily dropping. We're all dropping like characters in an Agatha Christie novel: "Accidental Death on the Orient Express".
