Adam, I like your ideas. I recall hearing of one modeller who had a projector under the layout, and by using mirrors, would project the image on a screen in his drive in on the layout! Alfred

rtraincollector, Very exciting prospects on the large layout. Keep us updated. I do quite a bit of bending and twisting to manage my layout. I have a cut out in the middle that has been very handy. However, I just installed a covered bridge in the opening, making it a bit more difficult to service the surrounding area (but not impossible) it is now substantially narrower.; but it was worth it. Alfred I’ve got an old iPod touch, which has a screen similar to an iPhone sitting in a box. I’m toying with the idea to see if I can use it as my drive in movie screen.

The issue I am having with building a new layout is that I like to change the themes from Holiday to Holiday and that makes it really hard with the scenery and accessories.. Like going from Halloween to Christmas then Christmas to Easter. They are so close to each other you get short on time also.

Starting my first permanent layout, mostly planning and researching as of right now. Keeping it pretty simple at first to get a good grasp for what it takes and build on it from there. Figuring some of it out is enough to make your head spin, spend most my free time now trying to figure out what I want to get before I get started, but very excited for it. I am one try and have all of what I need before I begin a project. The biggest hurdle I currently have is finding a switch that will work well with menard tracks and being a decent price, what I've found definitely is more than I was figuring.

Share your progress as you go. There are different approaches. Some people love the planning. Others like the trial and error (my preferred method), some are in between and some people pay to have a layout made for them. I have Menards track and love it. You are right, good price value. Menards track is basically a direct copy of the old Lionel tubular. The post-war Lionel switches work fine with them and can be found on ebay, train shows, etc, usually for not too much money. They often do need some maintenance, but that is pretty straight forward and there are plenty of YouTube videos showing how. Have fun!

JDekan, Welcome to the OGF. Enjoy working on your layout. PTCC (Brian) is a proponent of making a good design before beginning construction of a layout. Good luck at arriving at something you like. As I mentioned in some other post, is that when I built my current layout (2005/6), I did not plan - I just wanted to do it fast, wanted to fill the attic, and therefore my tracks went down as they 'came out of the storage boxes'. Although I am having fun with the layout, I have had to make more than a few modifications to make things work properly. Have a good plan, one that includes room for changes and expansion. Alfred

I should re-think my 2023 layout plans and stop considering changes – it has gotten me away from running trains. For example, I am going to resist making a connection between the outer main loop and a recently installed completely independent central loop (which contains a covered bridge. After I installed the bridge, I noticed that if I put the switch machine on the opposite side of a nearby turnout, I could have room to make track connections. This is got to be put on hold. Alfred

Adam, Great idea to use the i-pod for a movie screen - nothing wrong with recycling electronics. By the way, you don't have to be locked in to a drive-in. you can have the diner next to it - then you can have a huge parking lot. Alfred
