Okay I just reread this thread from the start. It has left me with a big question. There is a lot of chatter about what everyone is going to do, but I do not see any one saying anything about the progress although Alfred has hinted that his dilemma is still in motion. Traindiesel, you wrote an extremely interesting post about what you are going to do but I have only seen a very detailed list of the thought process. Where are the pictures of this layout being constructed. I love looking at progress pictures. Some have ask about wiring, Etc., well here is the chance to help them and let us see progress. Let's see pictures or video's people. I love reading the plans and seeing the progress we all make.
Opps! Just realized I need to put into practice what I am preaching.
Anyhow, can I hear about progress everyone has made and maybe see a video or picture? I will try to do the same.
Curtis
Get cracking Curtis. I expect to see progress over the coruse of this weekend.

Funny you say that as my conductor is sitting at the table installing mortar in the bricks of several buildings right now. Things are looking up for 2023!

Thinking of building a new layout that will run both O gauge and Standard gauge trains. An 8'x12' with 72" std. curve and 60" and 48" O gauge curve. Thoughts? I'll say this, I have decided to switch things up some, Pack up the G that isn't on shelves, ( including track ) I'm working on putting down Standard 84" radius and then 72" radius, followed by O72 and O63 in O. I'll figure out G scale in time ( probably a year or so, got to much going on to even think about it now ). My layout room is 10'4" wide and I have 15' 6" in depth. still plan to cut the center out leaving about 28" on one side and 3' on the other and 2' - 3' on the ends. As far as progress here is what I went through today, before giving up. Well, I guess it's called lesson learned. I bought some 84" radius track used, and every time I fix one piece I get another with a short but then I have to figure out which one, and look, and look and can't find it, but remove it and I'm good again. till I put about 5 more pieces then test track and it happens again, I can't easily test the track as I'm working on the top far end of a 16' table and it's the only way as I haven't cut the center out yet. Need to figure out how the track is going to lay first. So I just put an order in for new 84" radius ( seeing I bough 4 new ones the other day. ) and new 14" straights I will need and a couple extra 7" straights, so the layout will be all new track.

Test, guess, and revise - good luck with the larger radius curves - that should make for some nice runs. Alfred

Curtis, I have decided not to create the major blocks at this point - I can't bear going through 4 different track areas and doing insulated rails - I need to run trains. I am now about 75% finished with the Central loop - I'be got to put the track down through the Covered Bridge (the lighting is finished) and do up the accessories. Then some rearranging of UCS and installation of barrel loading accessory. Alfred

guess I will show you my mess and work area, in the first pic you can see part of the freezer that cuts into the train table.
Top shelf right 2/3 is Standard Gauge the rest is O gauge trains.
Now on the left here is most of my G scale but on the 3rd shelf down there is some more Standard Gauge.

I definitely wish I had some kind of progress to share, but unfortunately deciding to order the Big Boy put me a bit further back on getting a start. It has given me time to try to settle more on what I think I want, but even that gets altered here and there. Currently trying to find more pictures/references of the layout of a small town to try and figure out how I want to do that, but just not finding anything that looks something like I want it. I think that will end up being a thing that will have to be laid out to get a visual before it becomes permanent. Either way, I'm anxious to be able to get the point of getting a start on it, which may not be as soon as I'd like.

JD, Imagining and planning is part of the journey . I do a lot of contemplating before I do work - some of the time, it helps eliminate potential issues and gives a more desirable result. That is not to say that I can't be impulsive about a change, which often results in a re-do. Enjoy, hope tyou get to a start point soon. Alfred Alfred

My general plan for the early part of 2023 is to get the existing layout infrastructure functioning properly and get my equipment in good working order. Each week I complete something on the layout; which brings me closer to this end. For example, I just finished phasing the two 1034 transformers that are on the Central Loop. One is for train operation, and the other for UCS lights, whistle shack and gateman. I am not going to phase these with the KW and V transformers on the other loops. I am using one 153 controller on the Central Loop for all these accessories; and will use another on the East Loop (on KW amnd V) for the same accessories. If I connect these loops, I will then phase all transformers. Someday, if I get ambitious, and I’ve reduced the number of items on the ‘to-do’ list, I will replace the pressure contacts with insulated rail sections. Alfred

I need one more weekend to clear away all the Christmas decor and return the house to normal, but I am itching to get started again.

Dave, Do you transform your layout for Christmas, or are you referring to a separate layout? What do you have in mind, or are you returning to the existing set up? Alfred

Dave, Do you transform your layout for Christmas, or are you referring to a separate layout? What do you have in mind, or are you returning to the existing set up? Alfred Alfred ,I only add a couple of trees and some snow fluff to the layout, the clearing away I referred to is house wide.If you saw our Christmas video you know what I mean. As far as the layout plans I'll pickup where I left off with the walls and the Texaco build.
