I use a Lionel transformer from a Lionel set I bought for my son in 1996 and a ZW. I have a Williams transformer but haven’t used it yet. Wait! Joe, you commandeered the transformer from your son’s train set for your own purposes??!! That’s OUTSTANDING!!

I run my trains with a Lionel GW180 for the lower level where I usually run 2 trains and a CW80 for the upper level. The GW180 is powerful enough to run all 3 trains but I like having independent control of the upper level in case I want to run a conventional engine there.
For accessories I have a ZW and an MTH Z750. It's probably way more power than I need but I'd rather have too much power rather than too little.

Did Lionel make any changes to the ZW-L. In particular did they upgrade the built in PowerMasters.

Not that I have an interest in getting a new transformer, or a wallet that is fat enough, but I do have a question: Is the form of the output different in new transformers than post war type? (square pulse vs. sine) In general, will new transformers run conventional trains and accessories without issues? Alfred

In fact, I think they actually run smoother with the ZW-L but they do buzz a bit. Overall, its a plus.

…AND the OLD ones are ‘IN’. I just finished putting in a small shelf under the layout for a Lionel 1014 (40W, 1955) and 1034 (75W, ca. 1954) for accessories. These complement the ‘topside’ transformers that are for train operation, KW (190W, ca. 1958) and 1034 (), and a Lionel V (150W, 1946/7) for switches, UCSs and accessories. Except for cord replacement, a disconnected Common terminal, and temperamental whistle control on one side (on the KW I had as a kid), they have all worked very well for years. Alfred

Menards seem to be doing well targeting the traditional line, especially now that K-Line is gone and Lionel continues to focus on scale more than traditional size trains (except for pure fantasy/Disney stuff).
