Awhile back, this Lionel 623 was on the track, but I've since sent it to mate who fancied it for his postwar layout: You could pull stumps with that thing.

A few days ago, I was able to get up to the train attic. I ran my Lionel 2-8-4 Berkshire with tender (736, 1953) and a 3-car consist(Lionel, ca. 1953-55) - Silver Series passenger, dome , and observation (2533 Silver Cloud, 2532 Silver Range dome, 2531 Silver Dawn observation). Maybe video soon. Alfred Awesome! There's nothing better than chalking up another of "Life's Little Victories". I look forward to seeing your video, Alfred.

Bill, except for the dome car, this was my first set (and remains my favorite). It was a surprise 'for no reason gift' from my uncle when I was about 6. It was used when I got it.I have always wondered if it was't my older cousin's; I can't imagine the circumstances. Alfredn

Here's a Lionel #1465 set that was on the track right around the same time as the 623: This 1952 set featured the 2034 2-4-2 locomotive, probably the best (IMHO) of the Scout-type locos. It featured a regular open-frame motor, not the cheesy plastic ones from before and after. I added a bell (usually just an empty hole as manufactured) and green gems in the running "lights". I put one of these sets together a few years ago, but soon after, a friend of mine and I sent it to a disadvantaged youth up in PA. Made up this one for myself (inventory). The 2034 is a nice little loco, made one year only, 1952. Runs like a banshee, as do most of the Scouts.

Picked this up for $15 from ebay. Seller would even accept returns. Sadly, he's was selling off his Dad's equipment after he passed. Works like a champ. Will be carrying large candy canes on the Christmas layout and logs at other times. Looked like it had never been run. The logs were still in unopened plastic bags. Attachments:

Still got the decapod on the tracks. Man, I am really enjoying this locomotive!

For some reason, the photos are not attaching - will troubleshoot and upload later. Alfred

Here’s what’s on the tracks at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA. My wife and I visited the garden today, and stopped at the Train Garden which begins running in the Fall. It is a scenic representation of Longwood. My wife took photos for me (which are attached). From her description, it seems as if the SF freight has only one powered unit, and that it is not in the SF freight livery. The other train is headed by a Chessie System diesel. The sounds were pretty good. Can anyone identify the engine types and likely manufacturer for me? Alfred

The recently refurbished Lionel 253 finally hit the layout with a chance to stretch its legs: Haven't decided on a plan of action re: the battered 610/610/612 consist that goes with the 253, but until then, maybe we run a few 607/608 coaches behind it. Here the train emerges from the Lionel #305 bridge to head south toward the tunnel at Heat Pump Pass.

Nice.
One of these days I’ll have to rewire my semaphores; they are rather lethargic, not much snap in the action.

The Lionel 1465 set runs through the northern corner of the layout: The 1465 set featured the 2034 2-4-2 locomotive, offered for one year, 1952. Typically considered one of the "Scout" locomotives, the 2034 differs in that it has a standard open-frame motor, not the inexpensive plastic motors typically found in the low-end sets. I added a bell (the boiler casting has the hole for it) and green diamonds for the running lights. This corner of the layout will see some improvements in the near future. The Plasticville switch tower may move here, and Western Union will be arriving soon to continue hanging telegraph wires. Gomez Addams would be pleased as the basement seems infested with cobwebs these days...a good vacuuming top-to-bottom is needed.

Have the big boy out tonight, only the second time since getting it. Still can't get over how awesome it is! Still can't believe I got one, has always been my favorite even before I began collecting trains. Attachments:

One from the archives...a Lionel 812 with two pair of MTH LCL's aboard: I'm always looking for gondola loads, and these seem to work well. Lionel made standard-gauge versions of the LCL containers with opening doors, chains, and other details, but never produced an O-gauge version. MTH filled the gap.
