Following this thread is better than going to the movies. Look forward to seeing your scratch built building completed.

Andy I had not checked in a week. Wow, you have really made a lot of progress all over. It looks great.
Your build brings back memories. I remember our first styrene building, 4-5 years ago. It was a Suncoast kit that just had blueprints and pieces of styrene. Paula’s family are builders... they see blueprints and see the completed structure. Not me. Both Paula and her brother said, “Just build it.” Eventually I did so but it was a learning experience.
Obviously you have their ability and can “see” what you are building. Go for it. We will be anxiously watching. This looks like a fun first scratch build. Are you planning lighting for this one?
Looking at your pictures, it looks like you have some fairly long distances. Have you thought about using forced perspective in some places to really increase how far away things appear to be? I saw it done on Will Allen’s layout in Raleigh and he did some neat and we thought amazing things. Dennis Brennan has also done it.
Keep up the pictures.

How did you make your crossings? Fabforrest, I made my crossings by mixing joint compound with some black paint. Once I got the right shade of gray, I slopped it in between the rails, then gave it a rough shape. Once dry, I sprinkled some water on the area and carefully cut out the areas I wanted to remove. A tedious process, but I’m happy with the results. Thank you Brian and Adam. Thank you Bill. I will definitely use forced perspective where I can. I am working from pictures on Steve Lynch’s website: www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/mineola/mineola.htm#Mineola%20Track%20Section%20HouseSteve’s website is a goldmine for all things Long Island Rail Road. Wow! What a fantastic website to be able to use. It gives the flavor of the RR with all the detail.

Bill, it’s a great resource for sure. I’ve learned so much about the LIRR and it’s history. I’ve been fortunate to have been able to correspond with Dave Keller and Steve Lynch over the years. Dave is a very knowledgeable historian of the LIRR. They have been very generous with their time and have given me incredible insight into my endeavor. They wrote two books, The Long Island Rail Road, and Revisiting The Long Island Rail Road. They are among my most prized possessions.

I painted the bottom half Hunter green, and the top an off white. The top half of the bigger piece is unpainted, the smaller piece is painted off white. The gave the wall on the left a black wash after I painted it off white. The doors and window frames are Hunter green. This wall has been painted off white and hit with a black wash.

This is going to be a very good looking structure on your new layout. I like the hunter green. Good choice with teh off white. Great job.

Andy, the hunter green and white color combination looks great and I remember seeing it on some LIRR structures.

Thank you Brian. You’re correct Joe. That color scheme is standard on many Long Island structures.
