Tom, the PE boxcar looks better with the flat finish.👍

Thanks Joe.
It seems the preferred flat finish, Dulcote, will be no long produced. It is selling for $20 a can on some sites. I ordered some different military model flat finish and even that is hard to find.
The Scalecoat stuff is okay, but the finish tends to look sort of textured, not totally smooth.

I am still working on my NJDOT cars. I have the first one striped and awaiting the final clear coat. I am waiting for Humbrol spray gloss finish to arrive. I want to use a finish that I know will be compatible with the Humbrol paint I used. The stripes were done using Microscale red stripe decals. They worked much better than the somewhat transparent K4 decal stripes. Once the finish is applied, the windows, grab irons and diaphragms will be installed. Just gotta wait to finish it! Tom

Okay, just off the car shop floor...this is a test example of a few coaches I plan to paint. It needs a couple spots touched up but otherwise it is done. I plan on doing a slightly different paint process. I had painted the blue right up and over the small window bands on the top and bottom of the window area. I ended up repainting the small bands silver as the first red stripe decals I had were too transparent and simply disappeared when placed on the blue paint. Well the process was all for nothing as the new Microscale decals were totally opaque. So instead of getting a nice clean line between the blue areas and the red stripes, a sliver of the silver paint shows along the border of the blue and red colors. Anyway, the Humbrol paint I used had a nice gloss to it but I ended up using Dulcote to flatten the finish. It resulted in a nice satin look that is pretty close to the finish on factory MTH passenger cars... Tom

Tom, I think I see the sliver of silver but it's really hard to see. I think you did a great job on this coach.

Thanks Joe. I just finished a couple more freight cars. One is a Rock Island 40’ boxcar and the other is another MILW ore car for my ore train. The boxcar started as a Weaver undecorated car. These cars are not as tall as the MTH 40 footers, so the decal placement is slightly compressed. I have a few more decal sets with large logos that will be used on some MTH 40’ cars I have. K4 decals and Scalecoat II paint. The ore car is a K-Line product that I stripped, painted and decaled. Once again, Scalecoat paint and K4 decals... Tom

Tom, I see what you mean about the silver on the passenger car. But it’s barely noticeable up close and turned out to be a beautiful car with attractive colors anyway.
And your Rock Island boxcar and Milwaukee ore car turned out beautifully as well. As usual, nice work!

Thanks Vern.
I am going to touch up the spots on the coach when I paint the next car. I shouldn’t have the same issues with the next cars as I will do the paint pattern slightly different.

Tom, In the near future I plan on experimenting with artists spray sealer, used to keep pencil and charcoal sketches from smudging. It may just be the perfect sub for Dulcote at a bargain price. My nose says they practically smell the same.

I found some matte finish spray, used for art projects as a fixative. I am giving it a try.
I used some satin finish Rustolium on one project with mixed results. The new stuff seems okay. If it works properly, I will mention it on a future project....

Tom, those coaches look fantastic. I see the subtle silver paint as well. I'm not a fan of decals as you know and when I do repaints I will use the air gun for striping on cars. A lot more work for sure but I believe the end result will be what I will be looking for. Again Tom, FANTASTIC WORK!! There are only two people I would send something to be worked on and you are one of them!! Gary.
