I just finished a new Ontario Northland 1950’s era boxcar. Deviating from the usual boxcar red, this one is done in NH Medium Green. Another spray can of Scalecoat II that went on well. The decals are K4 and set with Solvaset. There are two sets in this decal pack, so I will do another in boxcar red as Ontario Northland had both colors on their cars. The car itself is a Weaver 40’ riveted boxcar. I replaced the plastic trucks with MTH made Weaver style metal trucks and couplers. I need to trim the door bottom a little as it is slightly bowed out. Also, I will grind down the truck mounting points on the car, so it sits a little lower... Tom

Very well done … yes the swap of the trucks is a big improvement. I was lucky to purchase quite of few of these before Weaver closed its doors. Atlas trucks look good as well. Great job Tom

Thanks guys. Here is the second half of my project. A western road for you Westerners.... It is another Weaver outside braced boxcar done in the scheme for Pacific Electric. PE was a interurban line that was taken over by the Southern Pacific railroad. They hauled freight with electric locomotives. It is a steam era scheme I painted with Scalecoat II boxcar red with K4 decals. MTH trucks/couplers installed taking the place of the two rail scale trucks... It is still in the gloss finish. I may give it a hit of flat finish.... Tom

Look great. Second set definitely needs the dull coat.
Would love to see pics of each step you take on these projects. Oh ... and figure out where you find the time!

Good idea. The next boxcar I do, I will document the process. Probably a Ann Arbor 40’ steel car.
The Dulcote is a preference. Some guys like the glossy look, like a real cars, when they were brand new. The flat appearance looks more lifelike. I have a few different flat finishes coming from Hobbylinc. I am curious to see how well they work.
The Testors Dulcote is suddenly a rare commodity as Testors is ceasing production. We will probably be reduced to using Rustolium flat finish before long. Rustolium owns Testors too. Krylon is also an alternative. I have used it on model airplanes with good results...

Outstanding work (as usual) on these boxcars, Tom.👍
I see what you mean about the door. Should be an easy fix.

Thanks guys. The door issue is because I had to add a strip of styrene plastic to the lower door guide. The undec models I buy are slightly defective, usually around the doors, where they used too much glue attaching the door guides. On some cars, I need to perform surgery to free up the doors. I had a spot missing along the edge of the door guide that looked bad, so I put the styrene stop over it. The door detail is riding on the strip, so it will take a little filing on the door to fix it. I gave the Pacific Electric car a couple coats of flat finish. It looks much better now... Tom

Tom what a wonderful job you did on that boxcar! How many psi are you running through your airbrush?
