Lionel will send you the parts at no charge if you want to repair yourself. Pictures of defect and copy of invoice is all you need, email them that info and you will see the repair parts show up in about 2 weeks. They might not respond to your email. Not sure how Mr Muffins handles things. It is very disappointing that this happens much too often.

Okay, cool. I wouldn’t even mind paying for the pilot if they sell them. I sent the, pics of the damage but not the invoice...yet. I will give them a call.
thanks Joe...

The rep from Lionel wants me to return the engine. I can do the work myself, but I have to contact them again to see if they will send the part...ugghhh....

Two new Lionel items in the plastic liners. The Halloween Berkshire arrived with one engineer figure broken off. I can probably regkue. The second is the Halloween Trolley. Broken roller pickup wire. I resoldered. The plastic lines will assuredly cause more broken detail parts

Tom, Sorry you had this happen, really sucks the fun out of buying a new loco. With Lionel, poor quality and unboxing disappointments have become a regular occurrence over the last few years, it seems to be getting worse not better. Over the last few years Lionel has screwed up regularly, in almost every way possible. For the last few years I haven’t ordered any new Lionel, and I won’t until I stop hearing of these disasters. There is no lifeguard on duty over at Lionel, enter the water at your own risk. Craig, how is that Lionel pool looking these days??

Maybe it isn't the packaging but cheap plastic for details that can't absorb any pressure that they use. I'm sure most people would pay a few dollars more for better plastic. They might want it back to see for themselves the damage that is being done by lack of quality control. I would think it would be cheaper for them to send you the parts instead of paying shipping both ways plus an employee to fix it.

Right! The pilot and ladders that were broken, are actually brass and they were soldered together. They broke at the solder joints.
I have had a few locomotives go missing in the mail recently. I am not big on shipping stuff, especially if I can just swap out the part myself. I just did the exact same surgery on my C&O 4-6-2.
I also don’t want to have the engine sit in a shop for god knows how long while they get swamped with Christmas returns. I don’t know. The process seems pretty simple. I would even return the broken part if they wanted me to...

Just a minor inconvenience and part of the plan. You are accounted for in the big picture. Lionel can't be perfect because that is not the plan. Tolerances you see. Just meet the percentage goals for quality and everyone will be happy ever after.
MTH is out, gone, kapoof.
Atlas can't/won't/who knows deliver.
Menards doesn't do engines.
Scott is more of a niche market (gets 90% of our business).
So Big Orange must have the right answer. Last man standing so to speak.
If York ever comes back, it will be interesting. Wonder how many halls will be empty.

With MTH closing, this would be a business worthwhile for Atlas to step up its "O" scale offerings. For them and us.

Lionel packaging has gotten cheap for years now. Sad really.

Tom, If you have a method of soldering zamac parts please pass it along. From my experiences the only way to reattach broken zamac is with epoxy as you did.

The parts looked to be brass, but I may be mistaken. There is what appeared to be solder at the joints. The epoxy seems to be holding okay for now... Tom

Ahhh yes. What now appears to be a broken solder joint was mistaken by me to be bare zamac. My question remains, and although I admit a doable method remains impossile, I thought you just may have discovered a magic soldering trick.
Damn shame about the damage, Tom. I can certainly relate with your reluctance to return anything for repairs. Replacing the entire pilot assembly is probably simple enough compared to the worry of another shipping endurance gamble.

I struggle to see how that part could be re-soldered other than by using a resistance soldering set. I have generally resorted to JB Weld epoxy for this sort of repair - never really developed the skill for soldering brass parts.
P.S. I would not opt to return the engine either - there are too many stories of people getting models back from Lionel with more damage than they originally had. D.I.Y. is a safer option for a defect like this.
