My new Lionel 4-6-6T arrived today. Unfortunately there was some damage to the engine. The two pilot ladders were broken off. I believe this is due to Lionel’s poor packaging design. The outer shipper and actual box were undamaged. I considered returning it but the breaks are clean and I should be able to repair them. At this time, Lionel doesn’t list spare parts for this locomotive. I am sure they will supply parts eventually (I hope) and I can simply replace it the pilot then. Lionel really needs to address their packaging issues. It just isn't right that a $1000 locomotive can arrive damaged. I haven't tried running it yet. Hopefully no issues in that department... Tom

Tom,
I just received today the Army 4-6-6T for Dec 25th. Thanks for the heads up that I should pop it open when my young train enthusiast isn't present, and check for damage.

Jim,
I could hear the parts rolling around when I started opening the box. Had that funny feeling I wasn’t going to like what I would find when I opened it.
Definitely check.
I dropped an email to Lionel asking if they could supply a new pilot assembly. Not much hope in that, but worth’s try...

You would think that by now Lionel would have mastered the task of safe engine packing. The fact that they have not confirms that poor quality is both accepted and expected.
Viking Yacht Company has for years had as one of its primary goals, “Build a better boat every day.” They are the leader in production sport fishing vessels (as opposed to custom built). Bill Healy who was one of the founders had no problem in charging for it and intended to be the best and highest priced.
Lionel is the leader but has no expectation of quality. Almost is good enough. I don’t know much about HO but my guess is that one or more HO manufacturers stress quality and will make it quite difficult for Lionel to break into that market.
As MTH phases out, do you think that the situation will improve? My guess is higher prices and lower quality.

This is just another example that a buyer should demand that the seller inspect the item before shipment to the customer.

Tom, Sorry you had this happen, really sucks the fun out of buying a new loco. With Lionel, poor quality and unboxing disappointments have become a regular occurrence over the last few years, it seems to be getting worse not better. Over the last few years Lionel has screwed up regularly, in almost every way possible. For the last few years I haven’t ordered any new Lionel, and I won’t until I stop hearing of these disasters. There is no lifeguard on duty over at Lionel, enter the water at your own risk.

I’m sorry you’ve had to go through this with your new Lionel engine, Tom. Like Craig, I haven’t purchased any current new Lionel locomotives for several years now because of their poor quality control and now inferior packing.
There’s no excuse for what you and others have had to tolerate with new Lionel purchases. I too, wonder if they will ever improve. That’s why I buy only new Lionel from about 2001 to 2013. They’re well-packed with no broken parts, and run right out of the box the way they should. Haven’t been disappointed yet.
I’m hoping you’ll get that replacement pilot for your new engine shortly.

I've had a similar experience but in my case I am pretty sure that the fault was not in the packaging itself but how the item was put in it at the factory. I grant you that Lionel's new packaging for things like passenger cars is undoubtedly cheaper and less effective than what they used to provide but broken parts when there is no sign of external damage to the shipping carton or the packaging within it smells to me like some factory flunky just jamming the model in the box. Once it's sealed no one is the wiser until it gets to the consumer.
In my case there was also damage to/breakage of a pilot but also internal parts floating around in the box. So I am pretty sure that this originated at the factory. A year or so back, Ryan K. solemnly pronounced that Lionel was getting a grip on issues like this but obviously they haven't.

No MTH, Lionel is crap. Is Atlas still around? Is Williams By Bachmann kaput? Someone needs to step up to the plate.

Well, yes - Atlas is still around in O scale and produce some good stuff but frankly for what I want (and have space for) in the rolling stock department, there are still nice K-Line products to be had on the usual auction sites. Dunno about Williams but the market is a shrinking one.

Call parts department, have them send you a new pilot. If no reply send Ryan and Dave a note

Thanks for all the input guys. I bought this engine as I like the looks of it. I have the K-Line version, but I figured I would go with an upgraded version. I tested the engine on my test bed and it performed flawlessly. It make the most smoke of any engine I own. The whistle steam is very impressive too. One good point that Brian made, was that the dealer should inspect the engine before shipping. I suppose they would have done so, if I requested it. I never considered that. I contacted Lionel and MrMuffins via email last night. I will give them a couple business days before I call them as John suggests. I wasn’t sure if Lionel would sell me parts for a locomotive still under warranty or if they would want me to return it for repairs. I don’t mind fixing myself. Finally, the tank engine is out of the body shop. I used JB Weld to reattach the ladders. I would rather solder them back on as there isn’t a lot of surface area for the epoxy to hold onto. But they are on and solid for the moment. When I get a new pilot, I will try soldering the old one back together, just to see if I can do it... Tom

Steve will pre-inspect if you request that they do so. Imagine the additional time that would take.
Paula just brought an Amazon box in. The tape on the front only covered one flap. The other was... well, it was flapping. But the box inside is fine and it wasn't $1,000.

I had him do that (a visual inspection) once and he reported back positively - trouble is, I didn't ask him to put it on a test track and it turned up with engine ID issues. Not his fault but Lionel's. Grrrrrr in any case.
