Cool video. I remember those big Great Lakes freighters coming in and out of Buffalo and Lackawanna, NY.
There are some tugs in and around NY harbor that have big Diesel engines in them. I believe FM is still produced for many non-railroad purposes. Some have the EMD prime movers and you can hear the “thrum” of the engines as they push barges up river.
The ship in the the video must have an MTH smoke unit, with all the smoke it has pouring out! Lol.

I remember seeing them out on the lake from my bedroom window. I grew up in a high rise on the tenth floor. It looked like a city of ships.

How do our new owners find the sound quality? Just for comparison, here's a video showing the last Great Lakes freighters that ran multiple Fairbanks-Morse OP engines. The usual configuration was 4 units coupled to a single gearbox - you could hear them coming a mile off. I believe all have gone to scrap by now. youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=lh5H1mbi1Wo I am sure that I recognize the locks in the first segment of the video (Sault St. Marie) as well as the background sound. No idea how the Lionel sounds compare as I have not got one of these engines.
(I always thought that the Winton diesel sounds in Lionel's Zephyrs are the epitome of O scale diesel accuracy. Unfortunately, they and other 3-rail O gauge sounds are outclassed by DCC sounds.)

Great sound, isn't it? Very distinctive. Getting closer to thread subject 😬, here's an old beast at work for the TVA.

Makes me think of the early mornings in Galveston, TX when I had to cross all those tracks to get to the boat I worked on. They were moving boxcars that had been loaded from the ships.

I like it but how does it run without a center rail?
