Got ours opened tonight. Interestingly, Charles Ro had opened the box and placed a copy of their invoice with a return slip imprinted thereon in one end. Couldn’t tell if the engine had been removed from the box and tested or not. See no problems. We will check it out tomorrow, see how she runs, and, if okay, put it away for Christmas. These used to come thru town frequently two blocks from here. Many times we would be on the bridge and watch them coming below us.

A video showing the different horns and bells would be much appreciated. These are suppose to have the new sound electronics with different pitches and control. On another site a video was posted, but the horn/bell wasn't activated.

Bill, that VIRGINIAN looks great!! Some locos look like they were made just for that livery.

I thought Eric from Eric's trains would have reviewed one by now. But perhaps he did not purchase one?

Just received mine. Beautiful engine but no sound so its back to Lionel! What?! Sorry to hear that. Let us know what was wrong. Just got it back from Lionel Broken wire to speaker. Now it runs great and sounds great however the truck under the cab makes a thumping sound in curves. I can't see anything out of the ordinary and it doesn't affect the way it runs and it only make this noise while rounding curves Anybody else run into this issue?

<<TRIVIA ALERT>>
That SP "black widow" is always a popular seller, because it's a throwback to a prototype which the Lionel Corporation made for the 1954 Toy Fair... but never brought into production if my memory serves me correctly. Then Lionel (General Mills) catalog'd and delivered the black widow FM along with a yellow/blue Virginian FM in their 1979 catalog.
Back in those days, I think the street price for Lionel FM's was close to $150 or so. But as was often the case in that "collector era", stuff that was produced in low quantities QUICKLY shot through the roof. And that Black Widow price soared over $600 -- a pretty hefty amount for a conventional control loco in its day.
As I recall, the only other Lionel FM that was more rare than the black widow was a Wabash model that was only available through the JC Penny catalog. Collector-mania of that era pushed the price of the JC Penny FM as high as $1,400 after JCP sold out its inventory. And again, back in the early 1980's that was beau coup $$$ for a conventional loco. But as a point of reference, the original Lionel post-war FM's in the same time-period were pushing $500.... and those locos originally went for a street price of $55 or so even as late as the mid-1960's. As a kid, I had my eye on the yellow/blue Virginian back in the day (1966), but I couldn't afford the $55 at the time. I'm gonna guess my Dad made $75/wk in those days as an accountant. So $55.00 for toy trains was pushing it.
<<END TRIVIA ALERT>> I'm always impressed with your knowledge/history on toy trains. Enjoy reading your replies. Hard to imagine $55 for a loco back then let alone $500. The FMs are nice but new prices on these engines hold me back. I like the 2nd hand market. Still have to engines from you. The Atlas SD60 slug and NYC Mohawk. Thanks for taking the time to post useful information.

Never was a fan of the FM Train Master, or any FM diesels for that matter. Just didn't care for its long length and Neanderthal boxy look. I like the EMD and GE diesels better. But then hey, maybe that's just me. 😉
That's me too - but true freight diesels (with a few exceptions, like the GE Evo) are really not my thing. The only thing I have ever had out of an FM TM is a smoke funnel, which I repurposed for a passenger car!
Still, very nostalgic info above from David (Rockymountaineer).

I thought Eric from Eric's trains would have reviewed one by now. But perhaps he did not purchase one? Doesn't Eric buy one of everything? Lucky us - otherwise I doubt I'd ever see 9/10 of new engines other than through his videos and yours! 😜

I would love one in the Southern Pacific bloody nose scheme...grey and white. They used them in their commuter services in San Francisco... Tom

But Charlie. It's not legacy. Always liked the TMs, have several MPC ones including the Wabash. Found a Southern one day, forgot I had it. I remember buying it just forgot I had it.

How do our new owners find the sound quality? Just for comparison, here's a video showing the last Great Lakes freighters that ran multiple Fairbanks-Morse OP engines. The usual configuration was 4 units coupled to a single gearbox - you could hear them coming a mile off. I believe all have gone to scrap by now.
