Thanks Brian. For some reason I never send these pictures off to Classic Toy Train. We should talk about that. And now, here is my Observation Car Silver Love these. Somehow, they look very familiar. And by the way, I agree with Brian, Wood. It's not easy to take a good panoramic shot. But this one is exceptional and your two gleaming Santa Fe Super Chiefs really stand out. It's a beautiful photo, so sent it in to CTT. I agree Guys!! Wood, send that photo to CTT!!! Your basement wall adds a terrific backdrop to it as well! Gary.

This doesn't compete with Emile's NYC "silverware" but while I am thinking about it, here's something of a red rag to purists - Lionel's use of very bright, almost reflective silver on the smokeboxes of various locomotives: I like it, however, and my excuse is that mine are both fantasy scheme engines anyway.

What's wrong with the car in the picture below?? I don't see anything wrong with it so I'd guess it has the wrong name on it.

You got it, Country Joe. The observation car in this set should be named "Silver Dawn." This one, with "Silver Bluff," is a factory error.

Shouldn’t it have a dome, also?

New York Central. I never get tired of looking at Streamline Steam Engines and your image is fantastic! Thanks for sharing Emile. Thank you Charlie. I love the Streamlined Steamers too. They are a beautiful combination of classic and modern and represent a nostalgic period in railroading. Emile

Are they post war cars from a later production run? These cars are the earliest variation from 1952, with the name plates attached with hex-head rivets. Later variations had the plates attached with round-head rivets and glue. I like factory goofs like this as they make great conversation pieces with visitors to my train room, so when I found this set at York a few years ago I grabbed it.

Shouldn’t it have a dome, also? The dome car in this set is "Silver Range." To my knowledge, a postwar observation with a dome was never produced.

I agree, great photos JD. But I'm partial to the unpainted stainless steel passenger cars which look more prototypical, over the painted ones. I had a set of Williams Santa Fe Super Chief passenger cars with that duller finish and they just didn't do it for me. I like the regular stainless steel cars where the room lighting kind of glimmers off of them as they round curves, whereas the painted ones don't do that. Just a matter of personal preference, I guess.

Yep … Lionel dropped an egg again... but it was better then nothing to pull for the Santa Fe passenger locomotive roster. Honestly though after the cars were released into service the finish did oxidize a bit creating a satin... but not painted silver … look.
Its ok, because the set is still phenomenal looking.
