Given the number of posts, it is obvious that “figures” are of interest.
Look for great things here. An area of need.

Yes, figures are of interest to most of us. This is a fascinating project, Adam.

Incidentally, some while back I asked my AWT supplier whether he could 3D print passengers such as these (from the GM Train of Tomorrow brochure), which represent idealized persons of the Streamliner era and not the Chinese idea that all westerners are 8 feet tall and wear baseball caps and/or orange suits: He said it was possible but his forte is crew and railroad staff figures and in fact they are all British or Euro persons. I suppose with the right software skills they could be done, subject to Adam's point about printing/moulding supports being built in.

Maybe Adam could come up with something!! Gary.

Great job Adam, and thanks for the follow through on the figures. It’s an interesting process and I’m sure we all look forward to more.

I’m only posting this for reference purposes. I remember coming across Smartt a few years back; they built O scale animated displays which I image were really for the museum and other public display end of the market. Some like Santa’s Barn look like old clockwork in action: www.smarttinc.com/home/custom-model-railroad-layouts/custom-animated-accessories/I have no idea whether Smartt are still in business - website seems to have been updated in 2017 but the display pieces date from earlier around 2010. I know that German model manufacturers did DCC controlled figures but I don’t believe those were in O scale.

Im printing a couple of seated people today just to give that a test. Pictures will come later. My opinion is that this experiment is a success. Printing figures/people is very doable and cost effective. But, and this is a big but, if we (those who end up taking the plunge and investing in a printer) want to print these at scale and in large varieties will need a source for the model files. I have found some limited options in the open source communities, but we will run out of variety very quickly. Those of you with connections in the hobby modeling business might be able to help. We are looking for the CAD files for people. There are two common types of these files, STL and OBJ, with STL being the more common. - STL (an abbreviation of "stereolithography") is a file format native to the stereolithography CAD software created by 3D Systems.
- The OBJ file format is a simple data-format that represents 3D geometry alone — namely, the position of each vertex, the UV position of each texture coordinate vertex, vertex normals, and the faces that make each polygon defined as a list of vertices, and texture vertices.
Maybe I should ask this, anyone on the forum have CAD experience and, maybe, could help design some people models for us?
