Here are a couple of videos of the new Lionel FreightSounds Reefers, from the 2018 volume 2 catalog. I have posted elsewhere but I am not sure who does or doesn't belong to which forum and I like sharing these, and I would appreciate hearing them if I had not bought them yet.
Sounds are subjective. I personally really like these. They simulate the sound of the wheels clanking on rail joints in addition to random flange squeeling and other freight car sounds. One change I would make would be to simulate not the sounds of the 2 trucks on the car rolling over joints (clank clank....clank clank............clank clank....clank clank............) which is what this car does (really quite accurately if you watch the wheels visavis the track), but instead a rear truck followed closely by the front truck of another car (clank clank clank clank......clank clank clank clank......clank clank clank clank). Let's call it 4 clank 😁. 4 clank would be inaccurate for a single car, but this is going to be in train so it would be more realistic, although still with its own compromise.
Anyhoo, neurotic nitpicking aside, I really enjoy these cars. Not for everyone though from what I can gather.
Car alone, volume cranked:
2 of them in a train, sound set to taste (about 1/3 volume):

I don’t know. Car still sounds louder than the engine to me. I don’t like the sound like a hollow drum. Clank, clank and squeal okay at a low volume.
That is one thing that makes the hobby fun. We can like different things.

We can like different things. I received the new sound car and was disappointed, mainly with the hollow sound thumping or banging noise. It just didn't sound as what I expected no matter were I ran it on the layout, it sounded out my engines. I thought for sure, Lionel would go out and record a more realistic freight sound. But, a fellow modeler liked it and bought it from me. Some will like it, some not. I didn't.
Added: Yes, I adjusted the volume, but no matter how I turned it down, it just didn't sound as I thought it should. Maybe, just maybe having 2 or 3 in a string, spaced, would sound better. But the lone car was over whelming.
Wish that the sound could be controlled remotely. That way as it approaches it gets louder and can be faded out as it goes into the distance.

We can like different things. I agree, Bill. These new cars are "OK" in a pinch, but NOTHING beats Lionel's VisionLine versions of these sound cars. And the first Tank cars were the absolute finest in FreightSounds. Unfortunately, since Lionel has refused to re-issue them, they still sell for a hefty premium on the secondary market. If you check out videos of the first VisionLine tanker cars with FreightSounds and compare them to the non-VL cars Lionel is pumping out today, there's just no comparison -- none whatsoever. I just don't understand Lionel these days. Well.... actually I do, but I just don't want to accept it. David

I wasn't so sure after watching the first video. With two hooked up and volume lowered I was sold. Pennsy484/Jeff thanks for posting the videos!

We can like different things. Yes, I agree. I think it's a tad too hollow sounding as well, but not to the point that I don't like it. I mean I like the sound of that MTH locomotive in the video too! 😂. There are plenty of recordings of the PRR 3 chime from a reasonable distance and it is actually pretty blah and boring sounding (that's made me more accepting of some of the earlier MTH PS2 PRR whistles which I thought were meh, not dynamic, but in reality are probably pretty accurate). I am such the train dork that I often listen to the old recordings that you can find on the market (semaphore records, etc.) and I guess I hear a wide variety of sounds on those to the point that I am more accepting that there isn't one way trains should sound. The distance from the sound is a huge factor. I feel like a lot of the modern Lionel sounds too much like you are literally on the train not watching/listening from 100 scale feet away. Same with these cars, it's like a sound that might happen literally inside an empty box car. Not what I would do if I was making this car, but Lionel crossed some invisible threshold with these for me. The previous versions I didn't like, but these I do. It really is subjective as to what we are each looking for from it. I have a small Bluetooth speaker in one of my box cars and I sometimes play a recoding of a real train through it. That's fine, but it doesn't react to speed or start stop and I have to do stuff with my phone to get the sound going and to shut it off. So I don't really do it often.

Jeff, thanks for the video demonstration. I think the car sounds pretty good and could add fun to a layout.
Is that your layout? If so, you built a beautiful layout with fabulous scenery.

I have the Pacemaker, it sounded more like a car being moved around the freight yard. Several of us returned them for a sound upgrade and that did help but they still don't sound like it's in a moving train.

S.J. Yup. I was sort of out of the hobby for a few years, and then after I got back in I was at York and heard one of those kind of FreightSounds cars. At first the idea of it (no programming, just put it on the rails) appealed to me. Then I listened and wasn't liking it. That's why I am more accepting of the new reefers, which aren't perfect but do pretty close to what I want. On the other hand, I guess coming from Visionline cars to these is meeting them coming from the opposite direction, so people are disappointed by comparison. I am still not 100% sure which cars have which sounds, but it seems like only these reefers from 2018 Volume 2 have this sound set, and all the PS1 FreightSounds cars, even those from 2018 Volume 2, have not this sound set that's in the reefers.

What I see in the videos by Pennsy 484 is a very nice layout. I realize that sound is a big thing today on model railroads but to me it is distracting. I guess I'm just old. I do like the whistle/horn and bell sound on locos. I also do not care for smoke.
