When it comes to model trains (this is a model train forum after all) have you ever just purchased one of anything (excluding buildings, scenery or accessories)? Not the same thing something different but the same category. I cannot think of a single, single thing that I bought and do not have another one of.
Can anybody think of the one thing that they only have one of?
If so please share.
I've got nothin' which is why I ask.

I wanted a Legacy H10 and found one of the separate sale ones and purchased it. Then I had an opportunity to get the Legacy H10 coal hauler set. So, I have 2 H10’s with different numbers.

Lets see, I have 2 of every engine I own in standard gauge except 9E, and that is because of the cost of a Orange 9E Original. That and really don't want anymore standard gauge as they take up so much room LOL.
Seeing I don't have much in O/O27 anymore I have a lot of single items, But understand where your coming from, in the 800 series and 2800 series prewar ( 820 - 811 ) at one time I had 10 of each type of car. ( a mixture of the two series )

The one thing I may have only one of is a style of steam engine although I do have two Mikados each with a different road name. As far as freight cars go you can never have just one. Passenger cars, same! I have 8 of NYC Jade green box cars all with different numbers.
The one thing I advise, buy what you like if you want two or 50 of a car or any engine you like. Don't let others rule what you do. If you want it and can afford it, go for it!!! Having fun is what is important, Remember it don't last for ever!!

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean - if you mean multiples of exactly the same item then, for me, the answer is there are very few things I have that fall in that category. However, if you mean multiples of the the same thing which have unique differences of some form, such as these Morris reefers, then the answer to your question is - I don't know, I do this all the time myself.

Right, in answer to your original question I have only one of this Legacy AC6000 diesel as it was a one off fantasy scheme when made and however great a performer it is I don't actually need a later version even with a different road number:
My excuse for the exception to the "one and only" rule in the video below is that the two models were made 20 years apart and the original was a startling product advance for its time. Sadly Lionel has gone downhill since and especially lately but I still treasure the original and the much later version:
Of course these are not duplicates and I must be very boring because I have only one set of those which are both products from 2005.

It's because you have a big heart. You can't stand to see anything be by itself, all lonely and afraid. Your trains need their siblings to be happy. Good on you!

(so totally lacking from my response). But my trains live cheek by jowl and probably appreciate a break from each other (and even me) as siblings tend to do.

Please allow me to clarify. You buy one milk car and then buy several different milk cars. You buy one Atlantic steam engine and then you buy two more. You are a caboose collector, a reefer collector, an ore car collector. That is sort of the rabbit hole that I am asking about. But none the less is there any train rolling stock/engine type regardless of scale that you were one and done?

OK, in that case each of the cars in the picture are a one-and-done. I have very few items which are exact duplicates - the one item that does meet this requirement would be a caboose - I have several different sets offered by the likes of American Flyer, Marx, and Lionel each with different consists but each which have the same caboose bringing up the end of the train.

I thought I had just two American Flyer Atlantic 4-4-2s. After disassembling the latest find, it turns out I now own four of ‘em. How did that happen? Dave
