Yes, even when I think I have enough trains and wayward off buying something news, I always find something special I “hafta have” in each new Lionel catalog. ... and sometimes what you find is NOT even in the catalog, but instead an uncataloged custom run. :-) Stu Yes!!! You could call the custom runs the “hidden catalog.” 😉

I like looking through the catalog and seeing the new custom runs but never buying anything. I usually only consider later tmcc engines but some earlier ones if it calls my name.
I consider that most tmcc to be a better quality than what is made now. Plus the engines I do like are just priced too high and the build quality is lacking IMO!!

The catalogs are okay but I don't trust anything I see in them anymore. After the Dreyfuss color debacle that I had to return, I won't consider a pre-order from Lionel anymore. I want to see the finished product in person or at least finished production photos (not a photoshopped catalog representation).

I agree with Na and Curtis, if I do buy something it has to be late TMCC or proto3.Lionel has lost me and alot of others due to their less than stellar build quality and pricing structure. I had a friend who could take apart a new Lionel engine and pinpoint every sub standard part. He did it to the Mogul and many others and what he found is appalling. From the time of the mogul he sold off his entire collection of Lionel engines never to buy one ever again. Now that's a little extreme but I can see his point. He now only runs MTH proto3, he even says they are not perfect but way better in build quality than Lionel.

Dave The gear boxes are awful, don't know why Lionel does what it does, and then there's the miss paints. Can't get grey right to save their lives. Electronics are top notch, mechanically not so much.
I'm not a fan of DCS, IMO I think Legacy/TMCC is a much better system in operation and sounds. I've had all my MTH engines converted to Legacy. Best of both worlds.

Honestly, though now that I can only afford two big items out of the catalog, I have to be very selective in my purchases. Case in point. I had the George Washington C&O set from the previous release. now that they are over 100 a car. I am just going to buy the engine... and that's all I could afford.

If I see one more primer grey smoke box I am going have a fit. I am sending any of those right back for a refund. I thought we were out to of the woods, then I saw the new Legacy C&O mallet... here we go again.

Don't get me wrong on any previous comments I have made. When I decided to move from "N" to "O" was because of its size, easy on the eyesight, but lately I'm appalled at all the problems, generic engine runs over and over again with a different paint slapped on and decaled for every railroad that ever existed. Gizmos added that are just problems waiting to happen. Boards that aren't durable and slight burps are destroyed and especially the lack of many parts and services for these expensive toys. Lionel use to pride itself on its durability and services and one could find one in almost everytown to fix problems. Can I afford these prices, yes. But there isn't anything that I really need, nor anything of value that I need to add. As to rolling stock I have little Lionel and over 80 Atlas Steam Era cars which I really like. As to bigger engines, I'm looking more into the smaller switchers and road engines. But they have to been existing before 1955/56 era.
One thing about "N" was that to fill the layout, I was buying more freight and passenger cars to fill voids were "O" I didn't need as many.
As to HO which is pulling my interest more and more are the amount of available products at reasonable prices compared to "O". Items that will never be produced in "O" and how realistic engines are for given railroad.
Its a dilemna I'm facing and finding someone interested in taking what I have. But I continue to run my layout and making changes almost daily still.

My layout is full of all the trains that it needs so there is not much anything to add but the occasional odd piece. Todays Lionel catalog offers product for the few whereas up until the 1990's they offered products for the many. What we see today are mainly low volume premium priced products that would seem to shut out the new model train enthusiast. While price is not an issue for myself, VALUE certainly is key. I am happy that I purchased all my trains back when they were priced right.

I’ve been hunting down CMP and K Line. Maybe 20 years from now I’ll be looking at this Catalog 😊

I am always looking for full scale sized locomotives and freight cars in either New England or Canadian road names. In the last few Lionel catalogs, fans of Canadian railroads have done quiet well. I hope that continues!

Yeah you get your B&M, and your NH but how about Rutland, B&A, Maine Central, Central Vermont, others.

They have a good bit of New England and Canadian roads in stock or for preorder and some custom runs too. Some nice older Weaver stuff too. Just do a search on the website for your favorite road.

The one saving grace with Volume 2 catalog goodies is they likely won't see the light of day in 2024. So Lionel is more than happy to stoke the 2025 pipeline of toy train deliveries now. Meanwhile, they still have Triplexes, F-19 steam locomotives, the AEC premium train set, and a bevy of Polar Express jewels to deliver in 2024 yet -- none of which are in bargain territory. And those are just some things on my radar screen from the catalog -- not to mention a few custom-runs that aren't exactly inexpensive either.
I'm sure there are tons more that didn't catch my fancy... hence my comment about not really needing a Volume 2 anymore -- even if the Vol 2 items won't arrive until 2025. Sometimes it's just nice to get off the treadmill. I'm so there these days.
